The Beths and Kip McGrath - Live at Cassette Nine
God the night of the gig must have been one of the coldest of the year, seriously it was freezing.
Despite the frigid temperature plenty of music enthusiasts turned up for Sal Valentines new club
night at Cassette nine were he jokingly quipped on stage about how it was funny he booked his own band for the first night. To be fair though The Beths is somewhat of a side project for Sal who sings in Sal Valentine and the Babyshakes but drums in The Beths (which I had no idea was the case until i went to the gig last night). I firmly hold it's always cool to try and promote your side project as much as possible, I mean if your gonna have a fling enjoy it am i right Sal? lol.
Photos from the reviewed gig viewable at Under the radar:
http://www.undertheradar.co.nz/photo/20360/Kip-Mcgrath.utr#/10
Usually good music wouldn't be enough to entice me out into the cold on a freezing Spring night but I had made plans to see my lady friend and so I was looking forward to the gig a lot polar blasts withstanding. Unfortunately I missed the bus on the way to Cassette, as the first bus driver was stuck on auto-pilot and couldn't see my in the dark. So I walked down the road nearer to St Lukes were there was more light and managed to flag down the next bus like a man possessed waving about. Being an Auckland Public transport veteran I take it as a personally challenge to see from how far away I can flag down a bus from, a hundred meters two hundred meters, ok that's bullshit but when the driver sees you and starts indicating it feels good to relax and pretend to be cool knowing your going to get from a to b.
After getting off the bus and thanking the kind Polynesian female bus driver i skipped over the lights and bumped into my friend Rufus and his girlfriend Jenco. Apparently the had just been swimming at the tepid pools somewhere, at the news of such delights on this ice age like night my body was overcome with a jealous flash of emotion, they just looked so much warmer than me lol. After wrangling my emotions Rufus mentioned how he had a rap record sitting on his hardrive that he had recorded in Vietnam which he had only left last month to return home to NZ. I told them I had some studio monitors and a bunch of enthusiasm about the project so he rumbled round in his wallet and produced a very novel business card, which had a funny play on words on it instead of the 'fuck the world' acronym he had flipped into 'Pup the World' with a little dog on the world with all his social media and email address starting with PTW we had a good laugh about it then I said had to run to the show as I was running late. I snuck in a cheeky high five and ran across the street cutting my way through the cold.
Checking into the venue I bounced past the bouncer and scanned the room while mentally clocking the outrageous disco ball dangling from the ceiling. I couldn't see my friends anywhere who I had actually meet at Face club the week before and hit it off with. I knew they were there somewhere though so flopped over to the bar. I ordered a lemon, lime and bitters from a very friendly and sincere bartender. Then just as my drink was being stirred I saw my friend wearing a coloured blue and black tartan shirt with her mate with blue dyed hair and plonked my weary bones on the chair beside them while simultaneously offering a genuine heart rendered apology for being late. I detest lateness. A quick scan of the drums and amps on stage thankfully signalled I hadn't missed the first act Kip McGrath. Which allowed me to rest back in my chair a little easier, i took my coat off in preparation for a thoroughly enjoyable night. My friend uttered she had high hopes for the show and later after the show she would mention how she hadn't been disappointed.
Kip McGrath a young ensemble of talented musicians were the first to preform. Their music reminded me of Mac Demarco with maybe a more ruthless Kiwi edge, less chorus more grit. The band lurched and rolled like a well oiled rocknroll machine. My new friend Rachel mentioned how
she enjoyed the arrangements of the songs and how the lead guitarist who I am pretty sure is Kip himself was doing a stellar job, he also even jammed some dirty funked up synth in one song which kicked ass! Also as a classically trained grade 8 musician I tend to take what Rachel says with some air of authority, she nodded her head and clapped with appreciation at Kips bands her favourite of the night. Rachel also mentioned how she played the french horn, which she told me sells for like 10K wow!! so she didn't actually have one ;(
The flow and feel of the drummer of Kip's groups with his snare flourishes plus the way he leaned into and accented the high hats in a haphazardly human way was great, something a drum machine can really struggle to replicate do in my opinion. As a whole I thought the McGrathies sounded more jubilant and daring than on their records all though fun and imaginative their records so far didn't quite do sound justice to how tight and well orchestrated their live performance is. However, I don't think this is uncommon phenomena as band members tend to change and musicians get better and evolving from past works that tend to represent a band in their adolescent period. My favourite track from the Kip was the groovy disco funk number towards the end of the set that the crowd loved.
Carb on Carb in the crowd looked to also be really enjoying the show i didn't get to say hello to them
physically but mentally i did haha
https://www.facebook.com/KipMcGrathBand
Next up were the headliners The Beths a casually dressed rocky quartet oozing swag. I'm pretty sure every member of the band is classical trained something I really admire in musicians.
Earlier in the night all the members had been waltzing around the room lookin chilled literally and very relaxed with no signs of worry about any rabid Beth's super fans in the crowd jumping out at them haha. It's always nice to see a band in good spirits before a show I think it can really tell how the gig is going to go.
I also spied the bass player of Miss June gearing up for the Beths set, it looked like he was flying solo looking to drink in the next onslaught of rock music, I thought about saying hi and mentioning how much I enjoyed June's set at Fuzzy Islands a while back but was feeling shy and hanging with friends.
I really admire anyone who goes to a gig by themselves it shows moxy and a strong sense of character.
Suddenly the Beths jumped on stage and started some pre-gig banter on stage with a comical 'fucking fuck' ringing out across the room uttered from the mischievous lips of drummer Sal Valentine.
On stage right, guitarist Johnthan Pearce a local mixing/production whizz-kid and a personal inspiration was tonifying his weapon of a choice a slashesque Lez Paul. I actually had to do a double take on the guitar he was practising scales on as even though I had seen him rocking it in the Beths music vids it triggered off a flashback of when I saw Guns and Roses play at Vector Arena, hey Johnathan that guitar needs a trigger warning sticker on it haha. Then in the latent memory banks of my brain meat I remembered the god of everything good in the world Neil Young plays a black Lez and I recovered from my mental discombobulation. On a side note one of things I like best about The Beths music are their backing vocals that remind me of the crazy horse maestros compositions. My view of the bass player was blocked but after a few kicks, doubles and flams paradiddle diddles on his practice pad Sal and his friends all fell into soupy mess of kiwi garage propelled rock music.
https://www.facebook.com/bethsmusic/
The first couple of songs from the headliners were polished renditions of tracks off their debut E.P Warm Blood you can buy here:
I think Liz the lead singer said the first song was a pseudo soundcheck but you never would've even guessed that. Bob Frisbee manning the mixing desk was as always killing it, I heard some guys moan about the sound behind me when you were right up close but I couldn't hear a damn thing wrong but I did have my earplugs in. The only thing I could that was wrong was their pretentious moaning dont talk of the music please!! I was sitting at closest table to the front of stage and it sounded perfect, just shows how you can't please everyone peeps. I also think people don't have much of an idea how to mix live sound just mutter about small problems. I mean if you get up real close in a small club your probably gonna get a lot of sound from the actually amps which is something an engineer has really no control over if they are being slammed full boar like The Beths did winning. In polar opposition to the dis-gruntled and rather annoying spectator I thought the vocals drums and guitars were beautifully insync with the bass pulsating like a beautiful well measured earthquake. Sal's starchy Ludwig acrolite snare sounded beautiful matched with his virtuoistic drum feel, it almost seems unfair how much talent one person can have, then you remember it almost always comes down to hard-work haha. As Kevin Hart said on his hilarious DVD "everyone wants to be famous, no one wants to put the work in"!! To me Sals rolls reflecting this quotes power as his prowess behind the the kit during the Beths songs really stood out to me due to his endearing sense of time, the way smashed his cymbals with fury and such wild abandon and the different beats and flashes across the toms. It may be an over statement but it's probably worth seeing the Beths play just to witness Sal thrashing a kit in all the right ways! especially if your a drummer.
Moving on to the guitars both Liz and Johnathan worked really well together both guitars harmonizng and singing together well. What of my favourite moments of the gig was when Liz played the first lead line on her guitar that sounded so musically like a trumpet which I am pretty sure is an instrument she also plays. Her singing was also clear and beautiful with unorthodox note choices in the vocal melody throwing the listener of when the song would return to the root note. Certain high and low notes really created a sense of random joy to the music that more predictable vocal lines and note choice would have lacked.
The wall of guitars driven forth by Johnathan were also sublime in the fact that you could tell how much detail he had put into his choice of tone and his pedal board. His lead guitar playing also reminded me of Dire Straits as did the whole bands sound. As a group the hit song "Whatever" was flawless and kept you in the groove and running through the highs and the lows of the dynamics but the new stuff was in a different league. As a group the Beth's are starting to hit their stride and I believe their new album that they have been recording is going to rock our socks off :) :)
The real bonus of seeing The Beth's play on such a horrible night was to get a glimpse at the new and unreleased material that is going to make its way onto their latest record. But as a memento after the show I scored a physical copy of the E.P as a keepsake and also out of practical necessity as i love listening to compact discs. I also bought my friend a band t-shirt as I thought it would look good on her. Apparently she plays the clarinet.

Band on the Run...from their Promoter
Tired of being pushed around and suffering from the flu The Neo's decide to pull out of a gig at their local bar. Their promoter who is paying them $1 a minute is incensed & says that they will never play in Auckland again...Moss's thoughts on this (drummer) from his couch, dressed in his grand fathers woollen dressing gown that is a few sizes too small is heart felt and deep.
Band On the Run - How to Drum Left Handed - Neo-Kalashnikovs
Not everyone's favourite neighbour...The Neo's drummer Moss Bioletti likes to practise before breakfast. He plays the drums with his little toddler niece to The Wiggles Quack Quack Quack Cockadoodledoo for a warm up, then launches into it in his PJs. Moss is left handed so this video would be good for people who would like to see how this is done. Follow The Neo's, a three piece sibling indie rock band. They live a quiet life down in the Antipodes, Auckland, New Zealand and they just wanna make music. Subscribe to follow.

The Neo-Kalashnikovs & Force Fields - North Island NZ Tour in May (NZ Music Month)
The Neo-Kalashnikovs & Force Fields - First leg of the NZ TOUR 2014
Forcefields (WGTN) and The Neo-Kalashnikovs (AKL) plan to decimate the North Island’s main centres; Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington in May (NZmusic month). They aim to build local buzz around their new singles “Zeroing” & “Treat Me Right”.
The tour came about from a chance encounter online. The bands have never met so it will either be a saucy first-date or perhaps a steamy love affair who knows? There might be a shotgun wedding in Auckland, a motel honeymoon in Hamilton or an expensive divorce in Wellington. What’s going to
happen in Palmy is anyones guess? One thing is for sure though both bands mean business!
With Forcefield’s solid live reputation in Wellington and The Neos heavy radio play on Hauraki FM this is a tour for NZ rock fans nationwide. From the angst student to the tough nut tradey and all those uptight brain surgeons in between ‘we will rock you!’ With brain-splattering bass, face searing guitars & soul wrenching vocals they’ve got you bro!

Linkin Park, Aloe Blacc and Incubus Produce "Wake Me Up" with Avcii - Plus news on Katy Perry, Macklemore and Kendrick Lamar
Not many people know but there was a superstar team behind the song "Wake Me Up" that went number one around the world. Not only did Aloe Blacc come up with the main melody and lyrics. The guitars were played by Incubus rocker turned producer Curly Hair. Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park also helped produce the song adding that 10% love, you know.
After all this god-like Avcci came in on a hoverboard and destroyed the track with his synths and cheesy smile. Out dropped a number one hit of epic proportions. It's nice to see real muso's hitting the charts when it's been dominated by pretty trashy songs by Pink and Katy Perry.
I absolutely hated Roar by Katy Perry it was just horrible brainwashing stuff that had a politically motivated message that shouldn't be allowed on air without a dis-claimer.
In other breaking news apparently Macklemore is going to be used by his backers to help make everyone in hip hop look bad. Apparently he's gonna win heaps of Grammy's or a really important one, when Kendrick Lamar really should. The reason is due to politics as Macklemore is a new age rapper that is going to make all other rappers look like mean people that hate and dis-criminate. I'm not sure what to believe all I know is $50 for a t-shirt man do some simple addition.

Brand New Music: Volita Bioletti (The Neos) & These Violent Delights - Limited Run almost Sold Out!!!
Writer: Moss Rock
I trooped off to the show-case of "Volita Bioletti & These Violent Delights" this Thursday at
Whangaparaoa. Our hosts Reggie and James Cameron of (Coast Open mic night) were lovely
as always and the Belly dancers were amazing!!! It was a great night all round and awesome
to see the accumulation of Volita's hard-work producing the record for the Auckland veteran
rockers TVD.
In my opinion the performance reeked of 90's alt-rock with a distinctly British flavour.
And my stand out track of the night was "Underground". I absolutely loved this track.
I talked to co-producer and talented multi-instrumentalist AJ of TVD and he also thinks
that song is a keeper!! I am almost certain my favourite song on the night could be the
front runner for the lead single off the record.
Time will tell as the official release will be out early 2014. However, there are so many
strong songs it really will be hard to choose.
I pressed up a limited run off 30 pre-release cd's for the event and only have 5 left.
If any rockers in the building want a copy of the "Volita Bioletti &
These Violent Delights" (Pre-release) feel free to email: Rocawaverecords@gmail.com
for your copy. It's on sale for $5 plus postage and all proceeds go towards band activities
(gotta love those activities :) The cd would definitely make a fine present for an avid Neos

Brooklyn's "Hunters" have Killer Punk Rock Swag and a T-shirt Game to Die For (Especially that Volcanic Tye Dye One!!!)
New Brooklyn band "Hunters" are getting a lot of hype in the big apple after signing a solid deal with a label with major distribution and backing. They've also been doing the serious musical rounds and have been playing and featuring all over the place in hotspots on the east coast. They hail from Pennsylvania and I believe they have adopted NY and who the hell wouldn't (this is unverfieid, damn my lazy googliness, but this is rock people its the bigger picture even though the devils in the detail!).
Anyway as I was saying New York is a dope town its like a fairytale on acid with a bit more grim and heatwaves or snow depending on the time of year. Thankful i've never been to NY when its been snowing, otherwise i'd have a sob story about having my toes freezing in the gutter while ate my way through every food vendor selling hotdogs on 7th avenue. However, I do remember getting into New York New York (had to do that sorry) and they had shut down all the hostiles and so we went up to Hotels and we were like being told it would cost like 5 grand, so we were like fuck that and instead stupidly walked through the projects, well almost. We saw some hair brained idiots do that and probably die. Instead Volita and I choose life and managed to beg, borrow and steal the last 2 beds in New York. Even if they were horrendously over-priced.
Anyway, anyway Hunters style and swag reminds me of New York. And thats no bad thing because that city in my books is having a strong resurgence and becoming a serious place to move to a music career. Building up out off the gutter and starting to slay audiences which is exactly what "Hunters" are about. They are the sort of muso's you couldn't help but help light a cigarette for and do some shooters before stumbling on stage and calling out all the prancy boys who think they fought, because they aint; Hunters is Tough, tough like that old man with a trench coat in that tries to stab you with a knife in Central Park but they just have been a random once offer that only happens to people like me to stupid to know when to leave parks (when everyone leaves its a sign).
If you get a minute check out this rock bands tunes on bandcamp!!! and dude this bands t-shirt game is powerful they have this volcanic tye dye that I want arghhh :)

The Neo-Kalashnikovs - Rock Music Born of Oppression: Rock Army Unite
I decided to edit this post as it was written in the moment when hundreds of people were attacking my band and song "Gorgeous Baby". When you have success you can truly ruffle some feathers. This is especially true for any feat of achievement in music. People may think that The Neos dis-like perhaps even hate Lorde or Lordie as we affectionately call her. Not true we have a serious level of respect for her achievements that are astounding. I may have said that she was a casualty of the culture industry being exploited by record executives, I doubt this very much. The reason I said this was perhaps due to the extreme heights she has achieved as an artist backed commercially from age 12. In reality I have no knowledge of her position as a person or her affairs. I have not taken anything out from the following extract and have only added in some good advice for young musicians. If you concentrate on the creation of your music and put out solid records and buzzed about videos you will achieve in music, on any scale but hopefully one that satisfies you as a person.
We represent lonely 14 year olds!!! we also represent the people that are cut down and rediculed, we represent the truth and god damn it we aint gonna stop because people catch some feelings we are the future and say fuck you to coporate Bull shit we are real rockers and we don't give a fuck what you think!!! whats sad is someone like Lorde being spun 75 million times in one week due to millions of dollars from a record company and singing about representing the Kids who are below the poverty line, its ludcrious she has changed due to industry involvment as a 12 year old she was a casualty of the culture industry and captiliast exploitation of young people for economic gain through music. (Edit) We'll thats one way of looking at it or you could think she flipped the game entirely and it was done on the back of a hit song that the industry backed due to its ability to connect. Thats a fair statement and I think we can learn a lot from Lorde as musicians; (1) you don't have to slay your guts out playing shitty pointless gigs getting paid nothing (2) you don't have to worry about selling your music as the industry can help you promote your music if its really good (3) Anything is possible in music and can see one achieve huge things it short amounts of time (4) It pays to have real songs with giant hooks in them sung by someone who can sick properly (5) We should have respect for our young peoples ability to achieve (6) dreams do come true (7) try not to upset people that enjoy a range of music whether independent, commercial or from Mordor. The Neos do and will always repesent the bands with as much talent as Lorde who are passed over and denied one fucking spin on their University station beause we are that fucking band you want to come and walk in my shoes and see the bullshit for what it is you couldn't survive we are heros to the underdogs and the have nots the people that don't bow down we stand for freedom of speech and will never ever be told to hold our tongues whilst money is running, ruining and controlling Music in all of its forms!!!! The Neo-Kalashnikovs Got Critiqued by a Corner full of Babies: The Bullshit Meter Subsequently Exploded

‘Gorgeous Baby’
Posted by The Corner × September 9, 2013 at

Great Sounds Great; Bad Sounds
Bad is a column which sees a panel of writers for The Corner review a
range of local singles and grade them out of 10. Check out the song
below, read through their opinions and let us know in the comments
section your own thoughts and what you’d like to see reviewed next time
around.
[Grade: 5.3]
Alex Lyall: Wow
Coronation Street just got sex-ay. There’s no reason why they had to go
to that trouble to get Rosie Webster but there she is strutting and
smoking. I think that was the mindset behind the song too, they’ll make a
song just because y’know. I say this because the entire time nothing
memorable happens, same tone, same lyrics. No risk, no depth. The
repetition feels less like emphasis and more like a piece of propaganda.
‘All hail the gorgeous baby.’ [3]
Robyn Gallagher: I like
this song for its lazy, sexy charms. The song doesn’t have much more to
say other than the frequently repeated line “my God you’re gorgeous
baby”, but sometimes that’s all that needs to be said. The thick fuzzy
guitar and Volita’s bright vocals create plenty of sultry atmosphere.
But none of that matters because of the utterly insane (and therefore
brilliant) music video. Starring ex-Corrie actress and current UK
tabloid hot mess Helen Flanagan, the video sees her pouting around a
country house while lip-syncing the song. This is either an utterly
genius career move for the Neo-Kalashnikovs or for Ms Flanagan, but not
both. [6]
Eden Bradfield: Man!
This video has a lot of views! Apparently the girl in the video is
famous or something. It’s an okay song that goes on too long- only so
many times one can repeat “..you’re gorgeous baby” unless one was David
Lynch and putting it through a voice processor, which could actually be
entertaining. Probably a longer song works to their advantage so the
166K people who’ve seen it can see more footage of Helen whatsherface.
As a song it’s a bit weak, but it’s a publicity coup d’état. [4]
Luke Jacobs: Ignore the
video. It is terrible. I didn’t know who Helen Flanagan was before it
and after it I know nothing. So just stay away. The song ain’t bad but
damn does it stick around for way too long. There is so much repetition
of a single line and idea it could have been 2 minutes long and
smoldered for that time and been perfectly good.
I guess whatever charm it had worked
because I listened to the rest of the EP and I can say it’s better and
this single is a bit weak compared to the rest of the material they
have. The production on their other songs is better too, much less
emphasis on the vocals and a hotter sound. The rhythm section sizzles in
the EP but on this track it kind of sounds muted. There is potential
here but right now we are coasting to average town. [5]
Elizabeth Beattie: The
song has decent dynamics, the musical simplicity is quite appealing. The
vocals are really excellent, well executed and they compliment the
instrumental passages well. This song has an early 90s trancey quality
to it, reminiscent of the Breeders while still remaining modern at the
same time. I do however wish the lyrics were a little more artful and
complex - after a few listens I really felt like I wanted there to be
more of them. But I like the mood this track creates and think it’s a
pretty decent single. [7]
Alex Braae: While I
wasn’t particularly impressed by the lack of punch in this recording, I
have no doubt this song would be incredible live. Perfectly simple
melodically, with a fantastic drum pattern underpinning it, this song
should be remade when the band has access to better technology. In a
dark room, smoke machine, too crowded with drinks being spilled by a
heaving crowd, the hooks of ‘Gorgeous Baby’ would sweep people up like
puppets on strings. As it is in the present form though, it’s just
potential. Frustratingly, not quite realised potential. [6]
Eamonn Marra: Nice
guitar tone. The harmony in the chorus is really good too. The vocals
are a bit high in the mix, and the production is a bit slick, but that
is just a personal preference thing. I was hoping this would go
somewhere, but it didn’t really do anything. It just stagnated with this
one idea for a bit too long. It would be nicer if it were half as long.
It’s not a bad song, it just lost its appeal by the end of it. [6]
Michael Kerby: Sleep
inducing. Which is, I guess, part of the vibe — a sort of fuzzed-up
Cowboy Junkies. But, while nice, (and actually a bit of an earworm) it’s
missing some crucial item of interest. I have no desire to ever listen
to it again, or to return to whatever languid world they just fell short
of conjuring up. It’s certainly a catchy bastard, though. [5]
Nick Braae: The
individual components of ‘Gorgeous Baby’ are strong. There’s the main
groove, with its menacing battle between a straight kick-drum pattern
and syncopated guitar and snare riff; there’s the lovely blending of the
voices; and there’s the sultry, bluesy melody. But they don’t quite
coalesce into a strong song, probably because there is so much
repetition of the ideas. It’s a shame really; a little variation in
structure and dynamic level, and this would have been a killer track. [6]

The Neo-Kalashnikovs Gorgeous Baby Goes Viral in the United Kingdom
The Neo-Kalashnikovs latest rock video for "Gorgeous Baby" featuring Helen Flanagan was a viral hit in the U.K being covered by MTV U.K, Huffington Post and The Daily Mirror and countless others. The video was originally released on Noisey.com a subsidiary of Vice.com the bands favorite alternative company. All up the video amassed across all platforms over 600,000 views.
The plan for the release was originally thought up by drummer Moss Bioletti who realized that Helen would be a fantastic star to help propel the video into the Blogsphere and rock Youtube. However, he didn't realize to what a large scale the video was going to be viewed and whether the U.K would embrace the song. Thankful the overwhelming feeling from the British public was extremely positive many hailing it as a great song. One blogger also said that it was the worst video of all time which the band was stoked with, especially since it was shot on a budget of $200.
