Drinking at "Scarlett Slims" in Mt Eden with GreenPeace Eco-Sales Warriors

So I was running late this morning after catching up with my friend Sabrina who is French Canadian.
I had missed seeing a jazz gig with her the day before and she had just finished her job at Green peace after working round the whole South Island. To avoid being labelled a Pike (someone that you always invite to things but never manages to attend even one lol) I caught the bus to Mt Eden and caught up with her and her co-workers in the dimly let "Scarlett Slims" were I found the gang of environmental eco-warriors congregated around a small worn table like out of a scene from LOTR.

Everyone had their drinks already so I surveyed the drinks menu with a cunning eye, I flicked through the badly worn pages of bar that at once let me know that this was a drinking bar of serious proportions. After having a serious commercial run as the "Eden Cloakroom" the newly named "Slims" had re-branded to attract I imagine a more hip Millennial crowd, while at the same time maintaining a Baby Boomer likeability. Sadly I am not able to drink alcohol at the moment, doctors orders, its really funny as I feel actually far more inclined to drink which I never had the feeling to do before generally haha. As soon as something is out of reach you find a hidden desire for the thing that before held no appealing at all. I guess that's why Aristotle stated the most pleasant thing in life is getting what one wants!

Anyway to cut a long story short I ordered an orange juice (no ice) and poured myself a water too. I meet some nice new people from different parts of the globe as well as Riley from Levin (NZ) and a younger chap who said his age was Sexteen when asked his age i.e old enough to have sex, his favourite band was Six60 and believed that the vast buck of the Godzone's population were die-hard fans as well, I certainly didn't quiz him on such an assumption being a fan of the band too and in-particular we shared the same favourite song of the first album "Purple" which was cool. I told him a cool fact about Chris Mac (the bassist) had played Paul MacCartney's bass on "So High" the second single off their latest album and he seemed just as impressed as when Mac had told me laughs! he better not have been lying :)

So the night wandered on and the drinks were drained off their last drops of alcohol from Monteiths distillers and the like. We did have a funny talk about French and Sabrina told me the genders of all the items in her language which was funny and surprising, I don't think the average Kiwi male would be impressed with hearing their beloved car is female, but actually on later reflection that makes complete sense as men tend to think of their cars as woman for sure. Beanie's were deemed feminine also. The introductory word used before an object La (feminine) Ler (masculine (probably spelt that wrong!) we discovered had know real way to help identify trans-gender individuals and objects noted by Riley singer out of Switchblade Season so I ingeniously haha demanded that Sabrina change all words that introduced objects in French to be       La-Ler to avoid gender stereotypes and emancipate the language in the name of Egalite. We thought about the idea and how horrified the French would be at the thought of a Kiwi telling them how and why to bastardize their own language.

(Song of the day "Never Kissed  A Blonde) the name of this song has been rebounding in my head, I keep thinking does it count if you kissed a girl who was a brunette before and then you kissed her again when she had dyed her hair Blonde. Does it count if they're not naturally blonde? Kinda of kissed a Blonde! ;)

 In the end instead of legging it to the local grocery store aka steroid powered supermarket Countdown we called it a night the Greenpeacers descending to their hostels for a final night cap as they had to rise early in the morning some needing to meet deadlines to signing up in order to continue saving the world. On a final note their was an affable German from Cologne who didn't like Auckland much, I said maybe it was because we lack culture and history in NZ or history that were willing to acknowledge like the brutal massacre of the indigenous population, he certainly agreed noting the lack of architecture (we knocked down all the beautiful buildings) but we came to the sorry conclusion that was really wrong with Auckland was the price of a beer, in Cologne you can get 750ml bottle of Vodka for 5 euro (hobostyle he said) or a civilized pint of beer at a bar for 3. After busing home i jumped into bed and woke up the next day late but happy!

Catching up with Chris Mac at his Club Night at Flight 605

I had a great time at Chris Mac's club night at Flight 605 last Saturday. He chucked some wicked tunes on the playlist and even listened to our new song "Drama Queen" and bought a Neos t-shirt !! which was super nice of him he said he would even wear it on stage when he performs next with his band Six60. He also recommended a very seductive new cider at the bar by Paynter's from the Hawke's Bay that was fantastic!! good call Gary thats a real nice drink :)

One of the songs that made onto the playlist last Saturday night

Paranoia - The Neo-Kalashnikovs (an exclusive music video debut)

The Neo-Kalashnikovs release their latest music video "Paranoia" directed by the talented Nick Tidmarsh (Graduate of Design Unitec). As one of The Neo-Kalashnikovs in house directors he has created what the band labels as ecstasy in motion underscored by hear hitting rock. Gabriel the frenetic bass player who has also studied classical piano for 4 years said;

 "This is just what the band wanted, something to get the people fired up like Fish Filet"

Lead singer Volita Bioletti was also beaming from the bands latest video release for "Paranoia" she said to me that she is so proud of the Neos for creating the track under heavy time constraints in the studio. She told me the recording took place in Point Chev Auckland, NZ at Tonewheel studios. I talked to her over the phone after the release, she said;

"Recording Paranoia was done fast, like the band had learnt the track the night before we were slamming it out a little sleep deprived (laughs) the next day in the studio. By the way we used some un-conventional microphone techniques to get the vocal sound which was something we were aiming for as a nod to our rock influences like the nine inch nails. Also if it wasn't for producer Justin James who worked tirelessly to create our vision this song would have been destined to be a no show, stuck in the vault as a draft.

But you know, everyone rose to the occasion and were so glad we can present it to all our loyal fans. Paranoia is off our album "She's on Heat" which is available as a instant download so everyone can share our art, but anyone who buy it from our bandcamp gets a credit on the next album coming soon"

They're you have it guys rock music for all

David Dallas' "Buffalo Man" Mixtape -- Is He Crazy

David "D-Dot" Dallas recently dropped his mixtape Buffalo Man.
His latest release since "The Rose Tint" is inspired by the undisputed funky white brother from another mother Jamiroquai, and seriously to even mess with J's songs puts anyone on thin ice even Dallas. The reason being that Jamiroquai never really fell of the "bandwagon of quality" as hits have consistently been dropped by the English born native. From the earlier days off Jamiroquai's career to recent times seeing him pile up a healthy amount of tickets in his Lambo the mans a legend. Although the singer may also drive to fast in his Ferrari's for the long arm of the law one may also feel a little bit racy listening to the mixtape from NZ's leading hip-hop head. Undoubtedly David's snap back is well and truly off and motioned in the direction of Jamiroquai in a gesture of respect.

First of all i'm a fan of David Dallas. He's pretty cool as he represents Samoa with class. Just don't count on him tweeting you back lol. I tried many times to get a retweeted to no avail haha. The stand out tracks off the album are easily discernible being; "Put it on the line", "Trouble" and "Never Let you Down". If you consider for a second that the release only has six songs thats it's a really good average of quality dope tracks. Having said that its not all rosy I wouldn't go giving "Buffalo Man" an A+ just yet. Instead I'd give it a solid B+ the reason being he is sometimes off key, falls over his own rap flow and is generally full of too much bravado all we need is substance.

I don't mean to be overly critical because I really like D-Dot to me he arrived on Something Awesome and laid his claim, forever in the NZ history books.
The reason being his open hearted in his lyrics to the ups and downs of life.
The Buffalo Man i "fuck you" laughs .But, with tracks like the lead single "Ever Get The Feeling" his raps also lack a strong groove as the beat either goes to slow or fast for his rapping. But I can forgive this because David is hyped and I can hear it in his voice, their is some serious cash to be made if he blows up over the Atlantic. Drake the Canadian raptor banked a slick   $14 milli of one smash album, so yeah, theres a reason he's gigging crazy over there with his crew. Lets face it Davids odds are far better than blowing up than a bum off the street hitting the Big Wednesday bankroll.

I'm gonna stress if Dallas can get his flow under control, bolster up his lyrics with some honest lyrics and smash a hit production with P money he could end up with a platinum plaque stateside. All he has to do is really channel all his potential into his next record. David Dallas is a star definitely on the rise and I ain't surprised.
