Dope New Videos from; Shakes - "Tambourine Girls" & Pikachunes "You Are"

Shakes new video 'Tambourine Girls" dropped last week and if I am not mistaken the songs sounding even better with some funny Jack-blasque visuals to go with it. But do I have a stigma in my left eye or does the guy in the video when he rips his t-shirt of and starts dancing/jiggling nah shaking around look a hell of a lot like the star of the School of Rock haha. On a serious note something really strikes me about this video that I feel compelled to write about and pose the serious question, where the hell are the "Tambourine Girls"?? I mean I like the guy playing all the instruments and find him entertaining to watch and his smile is in infectious and heart warming but I would have really liked to see some hot sexy girls undressing instead possible flanking him then pushing around and finally maybe dressing him up like a girl and turning into one of them haha that would have really answered my question. But with a white turtle neck that reminds me of Diana Keaton starring opposite Jack Nicholson in one of my fav films "Something Gotta Give" it's hard not to love this video and I really hope to God there are woman in the next video :)!!!! p.s can't wait to hear Shakes next record that they are currently recording

The animation for this video fits perfectly with the song i love the dystopian tragedy and darkness swimming through "You Are". In my humble uneducated view I think this is a real return to form from Pikachunes an artist that has had to battle some serious health issues in the recent past. Admittedly I don't know to much music from him except for his really early stuff that I saw on the telly but I definitely know about him and I liked this video enough to surf through Youtube and check out some live performances! He's also friends with my friend Ant who I went to school with and played some mean games of indoor cricket with in intermediate which is cool :). I love the drum machines on "Who Are"and also like the kind of rough mix too which is creative and uncompromising = kickass. If this tune is a taste of things to come I will definitely be dialing into check out the upcoming album on Monday records (Aussie label). I'd also be really interested to know who drew/animated the video it would be real cool if Pika did it himself!!! :)

Dan cranking his new blue Stratocaster through an amp in our dinning which he scored of TradeMe early in the week. It sounds and looks super nice with a heavy low end and clears highs that sound supersonic.

The guitar's sound and name always remind me of Stradivarious violin's like the one pictured below made in 1687 by the greatest violin luthier of all time! 

David Kilgour and The Heavy Eights - "End Times Undone" - The Jangly Happy RockNRoll Dunedin Sound

I found myself recently flicking through the latest Phantom Billstickers Cafe Reader "Have as Much as You Want" Volume 6 the super ice cold Winter edition and found myself studying the new David Kilgour and The Heavy 8's awesome trippy album cover for "End Times Done". Wow who does that hand belong to God, is the fire symbolic of a happy camp fire or mans ultimate destruction, does that phallic object belong to someone haha.

Jokes aside I read the article on Cleaner brother in arms Hamish Kilgours new music making and cutting old school vinyls for an American and low and behold I decided to check out some of the oldschool flying nun stuff on Youtube, the filthy old 16mm clips are great, they are so pre-youtube youtube class great tunes Kiwi history totally!

Anyway I was surfing around in the Google owned music quagmire and rolled across all the great classic songs from the Clean and the Verlaines, gush Dunedin sound those good old Dunedin sound days so innocent just enjoying being alive in the post war baby booming times (bad math give or take some decades. Well I got listening to the new album by Kilgour and Eights and give it a thumbs up nice one kick ass punch in the balls. It's got chills, its got spills, RockNRoll with such a lack of ego in the music you just end up floating round in the cold Blue Auckland Winter night sky.

 

F Sharp Minor Guitar Riff - The Neos

Here's a Riff I just recorded that reminds me off Green Day and is in Tom Petty's go to key
he made some of his biggest songs in! Dad played his old-skool Aria guitar with Humbuckers through a Fender Stage Lead 100 watt amp (no pedals). The Mic I used was a sE z3300a in Omni-directional mode (15 cms away) close to the amp capturing some of the sweet room acoustics.

BECK - Blue Moon [New Album "Morning Phase" Out Soon]

Here is the new song "Blue Moon" by Beck and it is sombre and beautiful. It reminds me of
that song "Beautiful Boy" maybe its in the same key the riff is very similar and seems just a bit more jumbled. Even the projection of the vocals are similar. It's a vague similarity but it really is the same in some ways. The songs lyrics are pretty bleak but the production is amazing. Beck's vocals couldn't be any better and I like the line "you can't save the ones you've cut in battle". Admittedly I looked at the lyrics and they all say "you can't save the ones you've caught in battle" but that seems less touching to me so I'll stick with my line as I think thats probably what Beck would've meant because the song is clearly about heartache and "feeling cut up". And as you grow up you do realize that sometimes we do cut the ones we love. Most of the time not because we can't not hurt each other its probably just because we do have flaws and no one is perfect even the person who you think is perfect. Well that was a bit of dross!! haha. Just listening to the song again yep it's definitely "caught" but "cut" is cool as well. It's more emotional. Other highlights from this track are the bass drum that is solid as heck and the mandolin which is well played or is it a Gamjo!! haha. It's true I was quick to think the new Beck record was of little to no interest but man he's still got it and his skills are more refined and dear I say it he's even more jaded haha. I hope there are some upbeat songs as well, maybe another "Loser" LOL love that song!! His Odelay record was a real classic as well, the artwork was brilliant too :)

King Krule: The Snarling "Easy Easy" (London)

I recently found out about the fire King Krule and his song "Easy Easy". Critics have been comparing him to Billy Bragg and it's not hard to see why. His songs are powerful and his voice is ginormous. The aforementioned song has a refreshing, genuine and British vibe too it. It's not indie dross or mainstream crap its genuine music that is in this day and age can be quite hard to find. He actually reminds me a lot of the Arctic Monekys before they blew up. The song is an extremely emotional performance in which Krule sings about dead end jobs, zombie people and the drabness of life in general. 

However, despite the moross view of life offered by the young man that seeks to highlight how the bulk of the society is slowly being crushed to death, you just cant help but feel positive while listening at the same time (rare). It's this distinct talent of Krule to tie low points and high points of everyones life experiences together that makes him a compelling new artist.

I've also included his live performance on David Letterman that he smashed. Especially considering it was his American TV network debut in front of millions. On a side note what I think would be really exciting would be if Krule channelled a little more Johnny Rotten. Everyone knows that Krule can snarl and it would be awesome to see him hack at society even more than has done so far and more violently.  To sum up a brilliant new musician with cracker of a cricket swing :) Videos of the blazing Londonite below!!

Terrible Feelings: I Don't Even Know You - A Great Rock Song

You know a songs special when it makes you excited about Rock 'N' Roll. You know that feeling brought on by Real Rock music that stuff that isn't b grade that real A grade shit. I just don't get a buzz from any of that grammy nominated shit for rock song of the year. It seems like those people are still so obsessed by The Rolling Stones and another good but never great song featuring Paul McCartney. Newsflash even though these heinous things are a reality in 2014, I'm just not interested in the 15th grammy on Dave Grohls shelf I don't even think he is haha. 

Instead I'm more interested in bands like Terrbile Feelings who have it all. Great playing, great songs and a heartfelt feeling of soul in their music, something from nothing thats dope. You see in many ways i stand apart from a lot of the music critics on-the-line because they are music lovers whilst I make the music as well :). Thats why I can feel the effort and power of Terrible Feelings it's in their music (like its in mine and others, maybe yours). Theirs really nothing like stepping into a recording studio and saying fuck I guess we better make something. In my mind it's a band like Terrible Feelings that deserve their minute in the vile of shifting sand so thats why I'm writing about these Swedish Pop-Noir champions.

In todays age not to be a cynic (#guiltyascharged) but when you put on a Grammy nominated record in most circumstances theres a feeling that escapes me. The real reason is their is something missing in the music! I'm not saying that they don't get it right but they could lift their game. When Bon Iver took home his Grammy's that to me was the best year on record. When Black Keys one all three grammy's in the rock categories that was good not great; they didn't deserve them all, neither did the Foo Fighters the following year. I think its the case that people need to realize that Rock music isn't something you can put in a box or a categorize and rate like kids school tests.

Know, its really just about self-expression and fighting for your dreams. Thats why you never see many bands these days because people just can't manipulate a good rock band. You can have all the money in the world but it won't help you get to the level of selling out an 80,000 stadium or going number 1 on the billboard. The reason is pop music aside people want rock music made by people like them not some monkey placed on a stage because they have abnormal wailing voice.

Just to rear off on a tangent but I watched a recent video about an A&R saying "I can't be listening to my demo box because I gotta believe that my signed artist is the next zombie superstar. But, in actual fact it's just like Snoop Dog said it be to ASAP "you can't make a star, a star is born". Labels need to remember you can't make the next superstar because they are. If you try and engineer one it will turn to dust and harm their life chances, especially their attainment of happiness. 

Anyway we're way off topic so i'll try and wind up by saying rock music is more than a sHit signle.       It's about changing peoples lives and inspiring them its about giving back to them what society would have them be denied. It's about actually giving a fuck about the people that are downtrodden and forgotten in society, your friends your family the people you love. It's about stepping to people who would rather see you fail than succeed, its about being yourself and enjoying life. It's about standing up for yourself because there are way to many people around the world that can't do shit. Look at Free Pussy Riot they could have been locked up in a Russian jail making police uniforms for 5 years!!!

Thats my friends is what RockNRoll is it's about putting your balls on the line and acting with courage. Being bigger, smarter and more lethal than your oppressors or people that try to judge you. Who the fuck are you to judge me?! when all you did was stay silent when you were passed the golden crown while others wasted away. And yeah it's about having a fucking good time. That my friends is what Terrible Feelings song reminds me of because at the end of the day "I Don't Even Know You".

Coldwar Kids - Still Running Cold - Have a Beer and Find Some Inspiration

Coldwar Kids finally return with a decent song. It's not really a great song but its a song that resembles a great song. It's a bit over-produced and whinge for my taste but a solid effort and its pretty full-bore so it would be dope for in the car.

In all honesty I reckon these guys should go out drinking for a couple of weeks then make a descent album. The song seems to me to uptight and needs to be looser. The people that sound similar are Grizzly Bear and Arcade Fire two bands that I would much prefer to listen to over this crap.

 However, unlike most people who like to hook into these guys and hate on them I do think they have some legitimate talent. All they really need to do really is stop being so uptight. I watched a making of with Gabe once about their duffer second album and it almost killed the buzz for me. These guys need to rock out more and worry less.

They're acting like music historians scratch that they need to grow a pair of balls and be god damn rockers. In conclusion solid song but do us a favour and get of the wagon lead singer and find some proper inspiration, that song is just empty and meaningless we need substance. please!!! you guys deserve grammys!!!.

Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box - Need to Counteract cheesy posts arghhh!!! :) Dead Sara Cover

The theme and ideas for the legendary Nirvana video were actually ripped off by the band and second director that ended up shooting the music video. Arguably it could not have been shot better. It seems like a sad thing to do though ripping off someones idea and using it behind their back. All good though hopefully this video counteracts the cheesy Guy Sebastian post and Digital Santa.

 I've also included the professionally recorded cover by Dead Sara of "Like A Broken Drum" I mean "Heart-shaped Box". Is it just me or do they songs sound slightly similar, perhaps something was lifted bu Guy Sebastian. No, I don't think thats even possible perhaps his writers were listening to Nirvana at the time. Brooklyn's "Hunters" have Killer Punk Rock Swag and a T-shirt Game to Die For (Especially that Volcanic Tye Dye One!!!)

New Brooklyn band "Hunters" are getting a lot of hype in the big apple after signing a solid deal with  a label with major distribution and backing. They've also been doing the serious musical rounds and have been playing and featuring all over the place in hotspots on the east coast. They hail from Pennsylvania and I believe they have adopted NY and who the hell wouldn't (this is unverfieid, damn my lazy googliness, but this is rock people its the bigger picture even though the devils in the detail!).

Anyway as I was saying New York is a dope town its like a fairytale on acid with a bit more grim and heatwaves or snow depending on the time of year. Thankful i've never been to NY when its been snowing, otherwise i'd have a sob story about having my toes freezing in the gutter while ate my way through every food vendor selling hotdogs on 7th avenue. However, I do remember getting into New York New York (had to do that sorry) and they had shut down all the hostiles and so we went up to Hotels and we were like being told it would cost like 5 grand, so we were like fuck that and instead stupidly walked through the projects, well almost. We saw some hair brained idiots do that and probably die. Instead Volita and I choose life and managed to beg, borrow and steal the last 2 beds in New York. Even if they were horrendously over-priced.

Anyway, anyway Hunters style and swag reminds me of New York. And thats no bad thing because that city in my books is having a strong resurgence and becoming a serious place to move to a music career. Building up out off the gutter and starting to slay audiences which is exactly what "Hunters" are about. They are the sort of muso's you couldn't help but help light a cigarette for and do some shooters before stumbling on stage and calling out all the prancy boys who think they fought, because they aint; Hunters is Tough, tough like that old man with a trench coat in that tries to stab you with a knife in Central Park but they just have been a random once offer that only happens to people like me to stupid to know when to leave parks (when everyone leaves its a sign).

Premier: The Neo-Kalashnikovs - "Blue Lithium" music video (Shot in Dublin, Ireland)

Hi guys here is our latest music video "Blue Lithium". After filming the "Gorgeous Baby" video I dropped into Dublin, Ireland. Well Dolphin Barn to be exact were our family rock out. The thing I love most about Dublin has to be the Guinness, there's just nothing like a Guinness in Dublin lol. The statute of my hero Phil Lynott the lead singer and bass player of Thin Lizzy is also a highlight in the heart of the city. The video "Blue Lithium" was shot and directed  by our youngest niece Tallulah Davey and styled by Bella Davey.

The recording is really indie and raw. I guess thats what happens when you record in an ex-gambling facility with a microphone and a pre-amp. The video is inspired by the economic turmoil in Ireland. Especially the issues of rising prices and living costs faced by the people in their struggle against the banks. We really hope things turn around in Dublin because the city is truly breath taking and the people even more so.

Hey did it feel getting so far in the Youthink Magazine's Best Teen Band Competition sounds like there was some stiff competition taking out 2nd plae against 50 bands is one serious feat of endurance?

It was an awesome experience and we learned a lot. The best part was meeting other amazing young bands in our area.

Whats British Columbia like to play as a band and what is the kind of thing people do for fun there? hanging out at Sheetz lol ?

We don't have Sheetz here, but we looked them up and they look amazing. We would hang out at a Sheetz all day long!

Does Oh Village approach recording in a certain way? home studios or big studios? particular recording method for example completely live ?

We've done both home and studio recording, and we like both for different reasons. Our album was recorded at The Sound Suite in Abbotsford.

Which tracks are the band most proud off the album?

Restart and In This House because they exceeded our dreams.

Have you guys been playing your jams in neighboring states?

We have played a bit in some other Canadian provinces such as Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

How was it working with Steve Klassen on Headlights/Red lights E.p ? 

Headlights/Red Death was a great first step and a fun experience. It was like a first date between the band and Steve Klassen.
