F Sharp Minor Guitar Riff - The Neos

Here's a Riff I just recorded that reminds me off Green Day and is in Tom Petty's go to key
he made some of his biggest songs in! Dad played his old-skool Aria guitar with Humbuckers through a Fender Stage Lead 100 watt amp (no pedals). The Mic I used was a sE z3300a in Omni-directional mode (15 cms away) close to the amp capturing some of the sweet room acoustics.

I'd just like to say a giant thank you too KUCR in California and WRSU in New Jersey for playing the Neo-Kalashnikovs on heavy rotation. It's so awesome to have both coasts going hard and supporting the band on College radio. It's super humbling to be on the airwaves in the U.S.A. Especially on the West Coast were we've preformed a lot in the past (hopefully in the future too)
and have a great bunch of friends in the music biz.

I'd really like to thank Dan and the team for their amazing work and rocking with us. I'm looking forward to possibly releasing an even stronger record in the states and the U.K as well. The good times are coming, no, they're already here!!! :)

Good bye First Drum Kit - The Neo-Kalashnikovs

Gave away my first drum kit today to my young neighbour. It was a red Premier jazz kit by Olympic and it still sounded great when I set it up for the last time sob ;( It was always a very musical drum kit, I remember playing it at the Kings Arms back in the day and this guy miked up a 5 grand kit before I played and it sounded good but then mine was miked up and it sounded so much better haha the sound engineer was really impressed haha. You never hear people talk about the quality of Pine wood in drum kits but I can tell you nothing never sounded so good!!  I got the drum kit when I was 10 so time it goes to another 10 year old. It will be awesome to have another drummer in the neighbourhood deflecting some of the pesky fun polices attention away from me haha. A Big thank you too Richard Foulkes Jnr for teaching me how to play the drums!! You'll be happy to know I'm working hard on the drum rudiments and speed and finger control as well as new drum grooves. I got bored of playing the same stuff over and over again so I've decided I want to play everything. Big thanks to Jeremy Bioletti for helping me in my quest to play the drums and driving me round to all the various rock clubs to watch me bash the drum kit into the floorboards. My closing statement on the Olympic, would be that it was a great drum kit and damn we sure did get our money's worth out of it haha  Moss Bioletti

Story behind The Neo-Kalashnikovs - "Turn the Tables"

This song is The Neo-Kalashnikovs first ever national rock hit in New Zealand thanks to Radio Hauraki FM. I'd just like to say a big thanks to Greg Prebble for believing in the band and giving this song a shot and all the dj's for cranking it out across the airwaves. I'd also like to thank Olly Harmer at The Lab in Mt Eden for doing such an amazing job on engineering and the mixing of the single. Brian Lucey also kicked some serious ass when he mastered the song delivering that sonic silky sheen.Volita you rock thanks for writing the music and lyrics and singing and playing guitar! what a powerhouse (in a tight package), Gabe for smashing out a killer bass line and Moss for playing drums. A giant thank you to our Dad Jeremy Bioletti for producing this record, if it wasn't for you this song wouldn't be what is, love ya heaps and Mum for believing in all of us. This song was definitely a career highlight in music for the band, and if I think back a bit it almost didn't happen, we were having problems getting a definitive take. Finally on the third try after Dad stepped in to the studio and told us to slow it all down and play it like a slacker everything clicked into place and "Turn the Tables" was born (Rick Rubin move over) haha :)

The Neo-Kalashnikovs - Play A Backbeat (Live Footage)

Here's a short video of The Neo-Kalashnikovs (Gabe, Moss and Volita) playing at the "Destruction of Rock'n'Roll" showcase at Backbeat bar on Friday 15th August 2014. I'd just like to thank William, Emla and The Rockshop for letting us host the event at their venue. Radio Hauraki for their continual support and championing of NZ rock music. James Fitz for booking the bands and sorting out the gig posters. And of course all the bands that preformed on the night including "Bloodbags" who reminded me of a really rocky Arcade Fire put through a blender. Thin White Lines for their full energy performance, I was stoked you played my favourite song "Control", damn thought they played it :) . And last but by no means least a giant shout out to Dead Beat Boys for swinging of the roof and tearing sh#t up with their closing song "Robotronics". The Neo-Kalashnikovs: Recording they're next record "Selfish Love"

Hi guys sorry for the delay in an update from The Neo-Kalashnikovs, early in the week we were tracking some new songs from our back log of material on our portable studio. We were actually lucky enough to get our hands on Dicataphone Blues awesome Neve pre-amp courtesy of Stuart that really lifted our production value. I've been bumping down some rough mixes and playing them through my cd player and it's sounding really good in my opinion lol. We've even decided to do some covers of The Black Keys and Justin Townes Earles music for our upcoming release. 

We originally started off trying to complete 10 tracks in 2 days but got bogged down in fatigue  so instead managed to track all the drums for the songs and overdubbed bass and multiple guitar tones. 

Volita also tracked a lot of vocals that sound smooth as haha. I'm not sure if were gonna rip the latest material off and finish it in the studio or if I'll try to mix it all and just get it mastered, depends on how it sounds of course. Thanks to everyone for downloading "She's On Heat" getting over 600 downloads and giving away close to 150 is bloody brilliant.

The name of our upcoming album is "Selfish Love" and it will be indie rock and roll to the max with some electronic surprises. The Neos will also be dropping two final videos for "She's On Heat" and playing some shows around the country and generally mis-behaving.

Lady Hawke's Anxiety :Recorded on The North shore and in England-- And Yes its giving me anxiety ...Not!!!

An album that delivers a groovy, upbeat, feel-good vibe in which the mix of instruments and modern sounds in the songs work well with Pip Brown’s smooth, strong voice.

Her songs tend to start off with a contagious beat and calming vocals, and then build up into catchy choruses you would sing along to when pottering round your house or cruising in the car. Though your body starts with a toe tap, before you know it you are giving a good old Kiwi head bang (though it's more of a side to side than the classic rock up down motion). That being said, Anxiety doesn't feel repetitive. The separate elements in each song make for a full and successful album, and the lyrics portray messages about life, relationships, questions asked, and stories told.

 In the album's titular song, Ladyhawke sings, 'Take me on a ride, show me how to hide the voice in my head', and is a personal favourite. 'Quick and the Dead' has a kind of army march beginning that is repeated in the second verse, and quickly gets stuck in your head. Songs like 'Blue Ryes' and 'We'll Find You' allow the listener to imagine how much of a good performer Ladyhawke would be live – and we'll get to see for ourselves when she comes to Perfect Storm in July. 

As a young singer/songwriter myself, I find Ladyhawke very inspiring – and I look forward to her developing and growing. Even the album cover is interesting, featuring a drawing of Ladyhawke with miniature Ladyhawkes entangled in her hair, alongside bugs, feathers and other bits. Perhaps it reflects ideas and symbolic pictures for the meanings she holds in her head, or entangled in her hair? I think it reflects her simplistic yet multi dimensional album, which I very much recommend is worth getting your hands on. Support New Zealand artists.

Clap Clap Riots' "Counting Spins" = Rock with Attitude

An album review of Clap Clap Riot's: Counting Spins 

Clap Clap Riots debut album Counting Spins has been finished to an extremely high standard that demands respect. Any rock musician or rock fan knows that budgets are tight and sales are down so when a flawlessly produced album drops its serious stuff. I also vividly remember catching the members talking about how they financed the album by the dearest mother getting a bank loan which I had real respect for. To me this album reeks of well spent money that is undeniably world-class. The actions of the young men to carve out such a strong album with a lot on the line is impressive. Pressure who needs it. 

From the "Kasabian-esque" guitar tone and thundering bass drum of opening track "Holiday" a dynamic rock sound erupts from my speakers. For a second it causes me to abruptly think about Clap Clap Riot as a band objectively. I personally believe it's important to note their original approach is direction that is not strictly commercial or alternative but somewhere in-between which is better. I'm not saying that all NZ bands aren't original but unique pieces of art in NZ music in most cases aren't always truly realized. I personal believe that being located so far away from any real music hot-spots globally NZ bands do have a tendency to follow instead of lead .However, the wickedly phased guitars and gated claps of "Moss-haired girl" are a testament to a band that flourishes under the imaginative pressures in the studio. Once in full swing "Moss haired girl" really comes alive chugging along like a testosterone fueled Ozzfest at it's peak. The solid groove and playful lyrics I strongly believe would do well on radio (perhaps not an obvious pick but a strong one nevertheless).

The evocative lyrics of Counting Spins also adds a great deal of weight to the L.P making for a great aesthetic experience. My favorite track based on lyrics is 'Forget You'. Clearly a therapeutic break up song the simple chorus "I won't forget you baby" really hits home. This song really has a strong feeling of emotion within it. By listening to the song I actually feel a feeling of genuine love in the singers voice and that maybe overly romantic but I definitely think that he's working out some heavy emotional issues because "he's so cold- so cold". 

As a rock music fan I know that there is always a struggle to keep up with pop musics boundary pushing production level standards. Maria and the diamonds latest album and Katy Perry's music are a testament to the level of U.S/U.K's music production prowess. Fortunately Counting Spins is easily equal. It's first single 'So You Say' has achieved fantastic results of heavy rotation on all the major radio stations in NZ and has stormed the itunes rock charts for multiple weeks. I highly recommend this album!.
