Freaky Meat - Slow Cooking in the Ghost Kitchen (Rocawave Release)

Rocawave records is proud to present the official premier of Freaky Meats "Slow Cooking in the Ghost Kitchen" music video. The song was produced by John McNab (music) & Shane Hollands (Poetry). The recording and mixing for the song was carried out by Olly Harmer at the Lab studios (Mt Eden). The song was inspired by Mr Holland's time on the road travelling around the North Island. Occasionally Shane would stop in to see a friend in Wellington who lived in a haunted house. Very occasionally both thought they heard Ghosts slowing cooking in the kitchen. James Percy and Jules Pettitt are Freaky Meat's powerful rhythm section that brought the other worldly single to life.

Credits and Behind the Scenes:
The SCITGK music video was shot in Titarangi, New Zealand. The shoot was almost brought to a halt when the studio/venue realised Shane's cigar smoke was in fact real!!! haha Paul Michael Moon Rogers was director and John Cameron was head of lighting and cinematography. John McNab was executive producer. Shane Hollands was lead actor and head creative producer. Editing was carried out by Mark Doyle from Ireland. James Percy was a producer who covered camera logistics. Jules was head of live music and sound on set  :)       
This exclusively self-funded NZ music project was a joint partnership between Freaky Meat and Rocawave Records 2014

A documentary filmed by Ruth Bioletti in 2013. The Kerouac Effect is an event that has been running for seven years in Auckland, New Zealand. Produced by the homegrown Beat Poet Shane Hollands, who rounds up a team of talented poets and musicians who are are randomly thrown together to produce material for the show. 

It celebrates the extraordinary life of American writer/poet Jack Kerouac on his birthday March 12th. The KE fever has spread to Wellington in New Zealand and Melbourne in Australia. The theme for KE 2013 was 'On The Road' inspired by Kerouac's famous book of the same name. Hollands sums up it " I really enjoy poetry and music and the possibilities that the KE allows".

Internet shy Mr Haddow has finally joined Facebook! 
This great Grey Lynn poet/gardener/comedian has been performing wildly & passionately in NZ for the last few decades with drummers, lawn mowers, saxophone players and full bands. He is a true hidden treasure of Auckland and New Zealand's poetry & music culture. He can recant John Cooper Clarke poems like there is no tomorrow and performs poetry as a true artist does, for the love of it.

The Scottish rock band The View are big fans of Mr Haddow after they played a show with him in Auckland a while back and knowing him personally and having performed with him countless times I can say I am a mega fan of this man. He has supported me and my band from the very beginning and inspired me so much artistically. If you are lucky enough to know about him you are sure to become a fast fan of this humble and very talented artist. Show him your love.

An Interview with John McNab from Freaky Meat:

1) What was the first record you bought?

Michael Jackson's Off the Wall. As a 9 yr old I was a serious fan of him and that album. 
The music was pretty high energy and the dance moves.. nuff said! 

2) How did "Freaky Meat" get their name?

We were at a book launch at the Dogs bollix  (Shane was co-author) The book was called "Freaky Meat" and I asked if we could use the name for the band. So yea.. my idea contrary to popular opinion.

3) What kind of guitar, gear do you use?

Mostly the Fender Strat. modified to accommodate my tastes which the purists would hate. Fender amps too, and guitar picks of destiny.
For Jazzier tones I use a Gibson ES-135 and the Gibson also happened to be the guitar in the new video because it looks sexier! On the recording the guitar tones of the Gibson and my old Fender Strat were blended together to add a unique shine to the record. 

4) Your favourite Freaky tune to preform live?

It is actually" Ghost Kitchen" our latest single when it's grooving hard. We were keen on making a dirty funk record injected with some heavy rock vibes. We like mixing things up a bit.. more than your average pop-song, experimenting with textures and dynamics. This song musically was more of a funk/rock journey which is different to the jazz/metal thing that we like to do as well. 
As a guitarist the arrangement of Ghost Kitchen is
challenging so when you play it well its awesome.

5) Where about's did you guys shoot your new video coming out soon?

The Tool Room in Titirangi. There was a bit of cafuful over the cigar smoke as Shane was getting a bit carried away with the cigar in hand. It looked like he was enjoying the cigar a little too much, It started seeping into the restaurant, and you really shouldn't be doing that these days. But he did a really good job and sacrificed his lungs for the shoot. Hardly any lungs were destroyed in the video shoot.

6) Who is the Rhythm section creating some fun silhouettes in the video & what gear are they using?

Jules Pettitt is on Bass guitar playing a 5-string Ibanez through his Mesa Boogie Mk V, 
doing his best not to blast us all to pieces.
Our drummer James Percy smashes sticks on a  
Yamaha Master studio Drum kit and Paiste Signature range cymbals.

7) Where did you track the "Ghost Kitchen" and get it mixed and mastered?

We recorded the song at The Lab studio in Mt Eden with head engineer Olly Harmer. He did a great job recording and mixing the song in break neck speed. We then sent the song to the U.S.A to be mastered by Brian Lucey who has worked with
Arctic Monkeys and other great bands like the Black Keys. 

8) Where have you played recently?

We played in Wellington at Valhalla which use to be Medusa. It was great venue and great sound, cheers guys really sweet set-up. We got some cool feedback from all the Wellington Metalheads, lots of open minds in Welly. The stage and P.A were epic and the layout was tight! We also played in Fielding in heavy dub territory, we survived and opened eyes and ears. 

9)  Any cool preformances coming up with your Jazz set and the Freaks?

Yes, actually we are close to confirming our slot at the Harbour Street Jazz Festival in Oamaru,

Lock up your daughters and batter down the hatches because Darcy Gladwin aka Cure Motel is getting ready to tear up the clubs across NZ & Aussy. His commercial debut single"Do It (Your Own Way)" out on Rocawave Records has already been testing well on the road. When he played at the Raglan Yot Club the kids stood up, listened and then went crazy!!! 

The single will be worked to radio through Auckland's newest upstart Record company Rocawave and released on physical Cd through Big Cartel, the bands Bandcamps and Itunes for digital download. 

The Neo-Kalashnikovs helped produce the alternative dance rock anthem and its ready for radio rotation thanks to mastering engineer Brian Lucey (the 5 time grammy winner). The band were utterly stoked to be part of the Melbourne producers musical process. Between the two parties sonic heavy artillery was in full operation. And sonic bass lines and powerful lyrics were deployed within the electric circuits of Auckland cities beating heart.

Oringially Volita Bioletti; lead singer and guitarist of the Neos had planned to produce the record herself. However, at the last minute drummer Moss swooped in and whisked the producer off to the Legendary, Lab studios in Mt Eden and got busy buying studio time and offering Darcy a second pair of ears on the final tweaks of the mix. 

Olly Harmer was at the helm of the Neve mixing desk with Darcy firing orders like a general of Dance royalty. Firmly in control of the creative initiative at hand his perceptive ironclad vision, eyed the finest details of the single that most would have missed. The result was the birthing of a soon to be underground smash with huge mainstream crossover potential particular in Japan!!!

The Head of A&R at Rocawave also helped film the whole recording session in the studio. Just so everyone doesn't start to think that Darcy wasn't the man riffing on the Les-Paul on the dance track . Although the release of the track has been delayed momentarily due to Darcy's heavy workload After all he is at the business end of finishing his full feature-length film; "Godplex"!!! 

The Must see NZ film of 2014 stars Shane Holland lead singer of Freaky Meat and has been shot over many Summers in Wellington and all across New Zealand. I was at test screening of the film and visual work is looking exciting and refreashing, especially when compared to the dross of some films being made in this day and age! 

As of writing this article there have also been hot debates on whether Cure Motel and Rocawave Records will license the song "Do It (Your Own Way)" as the theme song for Godplex, it all depends on the artistic vision of Darcy's sound design team who have a certain aesthetic in mind...but you never know! fingers crossed the song will be cleared and underscore a pivotal scene in the movie, I'd pay good money to see that! 

Due to the creative collaboration of actor Shane Holland and director Darcy Galdwin that spans over 10 years. Rocawave demands that both parties. who helm Cure Motel and Freaky Meat respectively should be the first official release on Record Records!! in 2014 

Two brand new music videos are in the wings for the release in mid-January!!!  

Exclusive physical cd's of Rocawaves first release will be available via Cure Motel at every show on his New Zealand Tour in Janurary. 

Both songs will also be Streaming live on Soundcloud very soon.The label is just finalizing which platform will officially premier the two songs.

Great to see Jules and John from Freaky Meat on the weekend. Absolutely brilliant to hear the new single they've cooked up "Slow Cooking In The Ghost Kitchen"!!! 

Outstanding production guys. Great to hear Olly "Magic" Harmers skills in the mix. Looking forward to seeing the video for it! might have to enlist my friend Daniel into help edit the final cut!
