Unknown Pink Flowers Spring to Life Outside Elam

I grabbed a photo of this tree showing off all its swaglicious flowers in the afternoon,
it's petals were all raining down like bone-tipped arrows set on fire. Almost every tree
to me is blooming in the city at the moment and it's really affecting my spirits in
a positive way making me happier. Not to say i didn't enjoy winter I really did
except for the two weeks when I was bed-ridden with a nightmare fever.

There's really nothing like sitting, waiting around eating a chocolate covered
energy bar and slowly seeing a beautiful tree snake into the corner of your
eye with dancing colours dripping from it's branches. Sadly I forgot to
read what type of tree and flowers I was staring at, i tried to smell the flowers
but there was no kick to them. I've also recently discovered a real fondness
for knowing Latin the proper botanical names for the plants i stumble across
especially the particular sub-species of a flower that catches my fancy.
Thankfully at Auckland university all the trees and plants tend to have their
ancient names encrusted upon a little bronze or steel plaque at the base of each
trunk or painfully nailed onto it's worn body. The tree from the photo I caught was
outside Elam the premier fine arts school in NZ, probably?
I usually hang out there outside after studying my books and eat something
to stabilise my sugar levels.

Sometimes I also study the people who come and go from
the art school with their easels and paints well more like macbook pro's
and new installed photoshop 10,0 now i guess. Sometimes I find myself
subconsciously analysing what they wear as my snack bar brings
my body and brain back to full functionality. I even imagine that I can
match their clothing style with the art they make behind closed doors!
often laughing to myself about what i guess is the art medium
for whom. And Contrary to what you might think of the next wave
of New Zealand artists on the big come up some of them dress
pretty low-key almost jock like which is a bit stale haha.
Of course you still do get the odd eccentric dressed up who could
the late David Bowie to shame. I like the manic free spirits the
best who turn their wardrobe and body into a moving talking
work of art thanks to throwaways of the last decades fashionistas.

Some of the art they come up with inside the dungeon of Elam
looks pretty sweet, bad and even great. I walked past late last
week and a girl was painting a vast canvas on easel while sitting
on a stool with her headphones blaring, she looked to be having
a blast although there was no real sign of paint on the canvas yet.
Which reminds me I once had a pretty acquaintance I knew
who was studying at Elam but seemed rather sad about the
prospects of not making much money from her chosen occupation.
I thought to myself 'I don't think real artists think that way about art'
not to say that some aren't driven by commerce the musician Handel
was a great composer and business man rinsing the aristocracy of
money, but for the most part they really don't care. Which reminds of
a great quote from the contemporary recording artist Kevin Parker of
psych-rock Tame Impala who dropped this gem recently;

"if you make great art, the wealth will come" my emphasis added.

'Waiheke' Painting by Robin Midgley

I just discovered the awesome kiwi artist @rmmidgley on Twitter. My favourite painting of his is the one of Waiheke. He's definitely an artist to watch out for in the future. I also think that it's really cool that he started painting later on in life, his art work shows if you have a passion for something you can excel regardless of when you begin. I find all Midgley's landscapes very easy to relate to and in my mind they help capture the reality of what NZ really looks like, a sleepy farm centric world not some annoying phantasmic photo with an aim to boost NZ tourism.

The Symposium is Over! Pluto were the bloody hell are you! I mean Plato

The Symposium is over, had a wickedly good time at the Mercury Theatre on Saturday in the God's theatre. The poetry and music were wonderful and the genrous red chairs very pleasant to relax in. A big thank you to all the Theoradical Hobohemians  and everyone that came along and had a beer, wine or cup cake and enjoyed the nights entertainment.

I was also merry enough to take to the stage on the night with Mick Innes who was preforming as Socrates and natually I was his faithful student Pluto, I mean Plato! However, after I trooped down onto the stage Socrates decided to lose the Toga a controversial and comical move and delieverd a modest and moving poem in his black underpants, classic Socrates move.

Below I am just gonna chuck up some ideas I wrote for Mick before he decided we should just wing it and just play it by air! Also thanks to Leighton Keutenius for coming along to see the show with Karen, always great to see you two at an event :) & Amber and Ben the sound and lighting was super dope. Finally If I have time I might post up a collage of images that I projected for the back drop for "Sympoisum"

p.s - thanks to Ruth Bioletti (Mother dearest) for organizing and promoting the whole show it was a big undertaking and I was super stoked to be involved, I had a brilliant time and glad the show was a hit and we had fun doing it! :)

Random Ideas about Socrates:

My names Socrates people fancy me as a Philosopher King
but really im just a professional bullshit artist, isnt that right Pluto
I mean Plato come here boy.

You see when Im not dumpster diving at Countdown I like to fancy myslef as
a bit of alright too my self-inflicted poverty isnt ideal but hey were living in the
real world arent we! well I hope we are bloody metaphsyics gets you know where
in the end take it from me!

You want to know a story? to bad im gonna tell it to you anyway and yeah you must
just learning something about the philsophy of life

So there I was in the black of night at Countdown Plato's keeping watch for pesky
security and I am about 3 feet deep in trash just about to grab hold of a some primo canberra cheese
when Plato starts yapping like he's discovered the meaning of life - I ascend to the top and
by god securities fast approaching and it looks like they've hired a new guy built like
an armoured horse and carriage, but I peered a bit closer and it was just a shadow an
illusion and the moral of the stories always get the Canberra bar nothing!

Your still here jesus thats the story I tell to people and it always propels people away
like a Sparatan at an end of year work do in Athens always good for a laugh

Look Im not gonna profess to know everything Plato's the real philsopher round here
arent you boy yes you are fetch boy fetch

But I definely know a hell of a lot about the Kardashians to give you an example
i could pick Kim, Kendal, Khole, Kylie and what the hell even Kanye's ass out of any
police line up in the world, we've definetly done our 10,000 hours of reality television
havent we Plato.

Which is a shame really I rather enjoyed that ten year period of my life, even if I was a bit depressed.

Some people think that anyone could be a philospher if they tried real hard their so idealistic
why dont they try coming up with how to unfuck the world everyday before breakfast, I had to give that shit up and I loved cornflakes. But I got so stressed I had an exoistential crisis from which I havent really recovered am I here, I know think I am but Am I really damn you philosophy!!!!

Recently I've come to the sorry conclusion were living in a world controlled by silver back gorillas
that has to be why everyones obssessed with someone elses banana

you know the worse thing you can say to some in the whole world apart from "go die you worthless piece of shit you god damn failure" these days is 'dont do it" because it guarantees that some idiot somewhere in a hick town is gonna serach it up on youtube laugh inthe face of good reason and say say "you know what, I know I shouldnt but Im just gonna shot some fireworks out of my ass"
the funny thing is they always ask you to watch them do the stupid thing, poor Aristotle he still has phantom limb pains from that manipulative little wombat that had the audacity to make up his own rules and ethics and rip his balls off.

Through all my philsophizing im really only certain of one thing who ever created the universe had a sense of humour just look at the Platypus half duck, half stoat, half beaver cute as a teddy bear and more lethal than a rabbie infested stray dog terrifying your children at a picnic on a bank holiday.

then I found out it wasnt a dream

You wouldnt believe it I once had a dream I owned a playpus once, it was so smart it drove where I wanted to go without even telling it - telekensis or sometjhing I came up with that word! first we pulled up to my favourite liquor store in Mangere, then we went through the
Mac Donalds drive through, round to my drug dealers house and finally to my drug dealers house for a bit of a buzz before finally settling in for a flutter on the roulette wheel on skycity.

I tell you I never so much money in my whole life with that lucky Platypus by my side, I just started giving money away but then my acid trip turned sour and I started lossing heavily on the tables every number was red instead of black Why WASNT IT BLACK I started threatening the staff with a finnish dagger my friend Ensis had given to me for safe keeping, bloody armed defenders turned up
thats when I decided to drink the hemlock all in one go I just couldnt be assed putting my hands on my head, it was a bloody great night though

Anyway i've got to catch up with the bloody stoics soon you know its bad when their all walking round with their flaming togas around their heads

Robotic love tangled up in colourful leads :)

The 16 track sounded sick today drums had heaps of low end and the kick was intense like an old skool soul record glad I tinkered round with it a while ago now it's way more open and free kinda like the difference between being locked up and on the run.
The guitars were shimmering almost orchestral clean not dirty. I hooked up the Ekadek electronics and sound Ak47 to my Akai hard disc recorder I rescued from a bargain bin many years ago a vintage grunge child of the 90's and was pleasantly surprised or in truth more like completely bowled over. I was just winging it as you do throwing up a few mics and capturing sound while trying new grooves and stuff. The wild, wet and windy backdrop of Auckland city and its up and down weather patterns provided the best scene like out of a movie for recording and mucking round and having fun. Its almost indescribable diving into the river of sound its pure and refreshing experience almost biblical you never quite know whats down their like the belly of the beast all the possibilities surrounding you like fate swirling round in immeasurable depths :) But God Am I looking forward to Summer or what man!

A Tribute to New Zealand Artist - Adam Tan

I'm Sending this one out to my old classmate and friend Adam Tan a very talented young artist from Auckland. I didn't know him as well as I should've but I know that he was a gentle person with a lot of time for others and had a great sense of humour and good laugh. This piece of his is called:

Natmada the Exiled - Observer of Truth, Caster of Illusions

"I’m excited to finally share my character for Light Grey Art Lab’s Rolemodels exhibition and card game.

I wanted my fantasy rpg alter-ego to be an extension of myself. The costume is based off of my regular clothing and the armour reflects different aspects of my personality. It was a fun and interesting process designing him to reflect the rl me. I put in a lot of effort to ensure that every detail meant something and I hope that it shows in the final artwork." ~ Adam Tan

I'm totally blown away by all his amazing art he  created. What an imaginative and creative person! Rest in peace buddy your going to be missed a lot

Musings about MGMT - Musical Heroes of a Lost Generation

MGMT is an interesting band for a mirade of reasons. Just today I was scouring the internet and revisiting the duo's early music which I adore. However, what caught my eye on account of if it being spread all over the internet was a 'riff' about the duo being bemused by success. It became apparent through a bit of reading that the pair were severely caught off guard by the maniac success of their first album "Oracular Spectacular". If you think about it does seem at odds with coherent thinking that two indie rockers would spawn 3 serious mainstay  anthem in modern times. No wonder the band was confused as well because they'd actually released runaway hit 'KIDS' 3 times prior to platinum sales of their so called 'debut album'. Fortunately the unassuming debut record by MGMT instead of becoming a commercial failure founded a place in the hearts of countless children worldwide as a very sought after record.

Unfortunaetly there is a sadness tinged to the inspiring success of MGMT. As they became a band decidedly against grasping the power of music in their hands, unknowingly dealt to them by a dice roll of fate. It does seem resoundingly sad that the success of "Oracular Spectacular" could poison the band against their artistic abilities to solidify the new psychedelic/pop phenomena the band had discovered. In turn the long-term ill effects of success creating an unsettling affect upon the direction of the band. Some critics even stating that the band descended into a post "OS era" of musical degradation in which the pursuit of their damaged musical egos was paramount.

Indeed the shock of having written some of the most populars songs seemed lost upon MGMT. One might even speculate that the hits they so unwittingly made saw them beckoned into a self-imposed state of prolonged depression. The effects of such problems discernible by the bands action in choosing to shun their new won fans by creating alternative songs which seemed paradoxically flawed. The fact that the mainstream didn't understand MGMT's later works was equally meet  by the undergrounds brooding resentment of their place in popular culture. I guess the saying it's lonely at the top isn't around for no reason. It also seems a musician can't simply make top tier songs from an alternative background see them cross-over into mainstream territory, then try reverse the recipe towards later indie acclaim. It seems no one has any interest in a band that seeks to re-enter the underground via the mainstream (an utterly foolish pursuit some might say). Perhaps the trappings of success are just to hard to miss! despite the problems of MGMT is it not unfeasible that they could still have derive some level of satisfaction by creating experimental hits. If they had added a potent underlining political message aimed at the youth it might have been a perfect endeavor. It almost doesn't even need to be said that chasing the illusion of reputation seems utterly pointless in music, especially when those that would viciously detract from your works are the same people you seek praise and acceptance.

Don't get me wrong i'm not saying there's anything wrong with the new music from MGMT. In all sincerity I enjoyed "Your Life is A Lie". The video was fun the cow-bell even golden live but  what i'm really trying to get at is the feeling of sadness created by a band like MGMT. It just seems crappy that a band who has the songs within them to compete with the greats (Bowie, etc), chooses to shun their responsibility by producing cathartic music for so many. Its like MGMT in  a way is like someone walking into a voting booth who in the end decides not to vote when they are faced with the conundrum of actually being able to. To be painfully frank it seems that the band is completely underestimating how many people are relying on them, crying out for them to flatten the trashy pop-stars of today whose music is gone tomorrow.

Music lovers want a champion, no they need a champion and it hurts music and fans to the very essence when musicians who are able to create the envisioned master-piece deny them. On the very basis that to many people will find enjoyment in the new piece. Everyone wants MGMT two simple guys from Brooklyn to create another classic album because everyone else lacks the style and finesse to do it properly (like them).

To put things in perspective people round the world are dying under oppression and although MGMT can't change that they can create a piece of art, world-spanning that can help address atrocities and reduce human suffering.

If and it's a big if MGMT made a whole album of hits with a truly dark and political sub-text it would be the best album of the decade if not ever. What they are doing right now is great and sarcastically funny but it is second rung to art that reverberates around the world. Lord knows we could all do with a new record to cling too in these uncertain times.

To sum up all I would ask of MGMT is for them to start thinking about others more who make up the lost digital Generation. Despite the world and it's beautiful technology corporate greed, corrupt politics and consumerist ideology still threatens human happiness. Musical Heroes are still needed and MGMT is one of them thats already  established. RockNRoll TMR
