The Symposium is Over! Pluto were the bloody hell are you! I mean Plato

The Symposium is over, had a wickedly good time at the Mercury Theatre on Saturday in the God's theatre. The poetry and music were wonderful and the genrous red chairs very pleasant to relax in. A big thank you to all the Theoradical Hobohemians  and everyone that came along and had a beer, wine or cup cake and enjoyed the nights entertainment.

I was also merry enough to take to the stage on the night with Mick Innes who was preforming as Socrates and natually I was his faithful student Pluto, I mean Plato! However, after I trooped down onto the stage Socrates decided to lose the Toga a controversial and comical move and delieverd a modest and moving poem in his black underpants, classic Socrates move.

Below I am just gonna chuck up some ideas I wrote for Mick before he decided we should just wing it and just play it by air! Also thanks to Leighton Keutenius for coming along to see the show with Karen, always great to see you two at an event :) & Amber and Ben the sound and lighting was super dope. Finally If I have time I might post up a collage of images that I projected for the back drop for "Sympoisum"

p.s - thanks to Ruth Bioletti (Mother dearest) for organizing and promoting the whole show it was a big undertaking and I was super stoked to be involved, I had a brilliant time and glad the show was a hit and we had fun doing it! :)

Random Ideas about Socrates:

My names Socrates people fancy me as a Philosopher King
but really im just a professional bullshit artist, isnt that right Pluto
I mean Plato come here boy.

You see when Im not dumpster diving at Countdown I like to fancy myslef as
a bit of alright too my self-inflicted poverty isnt ideal but hey were living in the
real world arent we! well I hope we are bloody metaphsyics gets you know where
in the end take it from me!

You want to know a story? to bad im gonna tell it to you anyway and yeah you must
just learning something about the philsophy of life

So there I was in the black of night at Countdown Plato's keeping watch for pesky
security and I am about 3 feet deep in trash just about to grab hold of a some primo canberra cheese
when Plato starts yapping like he's discovered the meaning of life - I ascend to the top and
by god securities fast approaching and it looks like they've hired a new guy built like
an armoured horse and carriage, but I peered a bit closer and it was just a shadow an
illusion and the moral of the stories always get the Canberra bar nothing!

Your still here jesus thats the story I tell to people and it always propels people away
like a Sparatan at an end of year work do in Athens always good for a laugh

Look Im not gonna profess to know everything Plato's the real philsopher round here
arent you boy yes you are fetch boy fetch

But I definely know a hell of a lot about the Kardashians to give you an example
i could pick Kim, Kendal, Khole, Kylie and what the hell even Kanye's ass out of any
police line up in the world, we've definetly done our 10,000 hours of reality television
havent we Plato.

Which is a shame really I rather enjoyed that ten year period of my life, even if I was a bit depressed.

Some people think that anyone could be a philospher if they tried real hard their so idealistic
why dont they try coming up with how to unfuck the world everyday before breakfast, I had to give that shit up and I loved cornflakes. But I got so stressed I had an exoistential crisis from which I havent really recovered am I here, I know think I am but Am I really damn you philosophy!!!!

Recently I've come to the sorry conclusion were living in a world controlled by silver back gorillas
that has to be why everyones obssessed with someone elses banana

you know the worse thing you can say to some in the whole world apart from "go die you worthless piece of shit you god damn failure" these days is 'dont do it" because it guarantees that some idiot somewhere in a hick town is gonna serach it up on youtube laugh inthe face of good reason and say say "you know what, I know I shouldnt but Im just gonna shot some fireworks out of my ass"
the funny thing is they always ask you to watch them do the stupid thing, poor Aristotle he still has phantom limb pains from that manipulative little wombat that had the audacity to make up his own rules and ethics and rip his balls off.

Through all my philsophizing im really only certain of one thing who ever created the universe had a sense of humour just look at the Platypus half duck, half stoat, half beaver cute as a teddy bear and more lethal than a rabbie infested stray dog terrifying your children at a picnic on a bank holiday.

then I found out it wasnt a dream

You wouldnt believe it I once had a dream I owned a playpus once, it was so smart it drove where I wanted to go without even telling it - telekensis or sometjhing I came up with that word! first we pulled up to my favourite liquor store in Mangere, then we went through the
Mac Donalds drive through, round to my drug dealers house and finally to my drug dealers house for a bit of a buzz before finally settling in for a flutter on the roulette wheel on skycity.

I tell you I never so much money in my whole life with that lucky Platypus by my side, I just started giving money away but then my acid trip turned sour and I started lossing heavily on the tables every number was red instead of black Why WASNT IT BLACK I started threatening the staff with a finnish dagger my friend Ensis had given to me for safe keeping, bloody armed defenders turned up
thats when I decided to drink the hemlock all in one go I just couldnt be assed putting my hands on my head, it was a bloody great night though

Anyway i've got to catch up with the bloody stoics soon you know its bad when their all walking round with their flaming togas around their heads

Tourettes on his "Childhood" a song from Dead Dogs Dance

Tourettes - ChildHood

when i was young my parents used to lie to me a lot
my mother once told me the water from the hot tap was poisonous
on another occasion
my father said the sound of the waves breaking was a Taniwha
now i have a reckless imagination

my folks were working class hippies
which meant we ate organic granny smith apples
but it was ok to swear at the television
there was always a pack of dogs in our house
all of which my mother had composed songs for
my father smoked weed and played scrabble with local madmen
sometimes he'd sit for hours without speaking and then suddenly say something like Reconbockulating and refuse to elaborate
for a few months to rebel my sister became a born again Christian
and i was forbidden to eat mc Donald's or watch the A team
so i survived on Volgels bread and Easten European coming of age films
its funny how everyone thinks their normal

at age 7 my heros were Arnold schwarzenegger , Elvis Presley and the Velvet Underground
the boogieman was Robert Muldon
at gay fawkes we'd burn crude effigies of him in screaming bonfires
i remember protests
against the springbok tour
against Rogernomics
against nuclear testing
carnivals of desperate rage
parading down queen street
amongst this unrest
the rainbow warrior came to town
i had imagined something majestic
after all it was going save us from nuclear holocaust
but it was just a big green boat
and then some french spies blew it up
i had the same name as one of the agents

at my primary school
the decal rating was so low it had a decibel point in front of it
once the mayor came to talk to the school
we all sat on the field
while she gave her speech two dogs started fucking behind her
and this says all you need to know about Grey Lynn primary

everybody in the neighborhood was fluent in violence
they spoke it at school, the teachers to the students the parents to the teachers the students to me
my mother would scream it at us in the bath waving wooden spoons and plastic sandals
my father would mutter it throwing toys and televisions out onto the road
the older kids would hiss it in the streets after dark
to this day i understand the language perfectly but cant speak a word of it to save myself

my mother believed we wouldn't live to grow up
that nuclear bombs would rain down on us out any second
so she let us run wild in the sewers beneath our street
high on brown sugar and nightmares
it was the 80's things were different then

when i was young
it seemed like everything was crazy.
now I'm older i know that it is.

Theoradical Hobohemians - Underground Poetry Event 1st April 8pm (The Basement)

Interview with promoter Ruth Bioletti
Q. How did you come up with the name "Theoradical Hobohemian" for your event?
A. I was literally banging my head against a brick wall trying to think up a cool name of
r my show of underground, irreverent poets when my family and I did a brain storm after dinner one night. Luckily for me there are some very creative people in my house and everyone had a word they particularly liked. My son wanted the word Theoretical, my daughter Radical, I like Bohemian and my husband Hobosexual but that one was taken. So there you have it...Theoradical Hobohemians!!! Four words slammed together, its quite simple really!!! ((laughter))

Q. What can we expect from the show at The Basement on April 1st
A. Well anything can happen at this event!! I've come to know these poets and musicians and they are....well..'wild' and that really is an understatement, believe you me!! Expect the unexpected is the best advise I can give anyone brave enough to buy a ticket!! (laughing). But there is going to be some serious Beat Poetry from Shane Hollands who is teaming up with musician Paul Williams as The Beautiful Losers. The line up is a who's who of Auckland's Underground Poetry scene...from the inner world of the visually impaired poet Renè Harrison who looks like a pirate, to the take no prisoners ex-marine Jeremy Beale!

Q. I see there are a couple of women in the line up Ruth...are they as 'irreverent' as the guy poets??
A. Ha are you kidding me, these two women Michelle Bolton and Simone Kaho are feisty woman and not to be messed with!!  Michelle's mashed up American-New Zealand accent can cut through the noise of the worst Krd bars! Simone is also not the type of woman to let people ignore her. When she gets up on to the stage she pounds that poetry out...you listen!!! Both women are very experienced and are respected amongst the poetry scene in Auckland, I'm proud to have them on board.

Q. How do the musicians fit into this picture?
A. I take my hat off to them, it can't be easy playing music and accompanying poets with all their eccentricities. Jarad Bryant makes it look easy. He adds a delightful feel to the show, you can see he's into fun...he cracks me up with his over the top outfits!  Paul Williams I would describe as a heavy weight in terms of music. He has a sensibility that is extraordinary, the best description of him that I have come across is 'soundscapes' his stuff is on another level.

Q. What is your personal favourite??
A. Hummm thats a dangerous question I'll have to watch my back at the rehearsal on Sunday (cringing). But lets be brave here...I'm going to say that Jarad and Christian Jensen's beat poem 'Simple Human' was an unabashed smashed hit at The Kerouac Effect in 2013. Christian's has a kind of cynical theme to his poetry, combined that with Jarad's crazy techno beats and you have genius!!

Q. How did you get into promoting shows in Auckland Ruth?
A. That is a very good question??? Ummm well it really came down to being the only person silly enough to take on the job!! (eye roll!!) I'm an artist and I decided to go to Poetry Live as a night out to get away from the art scene...a change of scene really. But what I notice that there were some seriously talented people at this club but they needed promotion to get some kind of elevation and recognition. Poets reciting to poets!!! I would be thinking, 'hey there is a whole world out there lets go'...so there you have it. I felt this need to help them out a bit so I started taking photos with my cheap cell phone and it grew from there.

Q. Its at The Basement?
A. Yes it will be wonderful to see them there, on April Fools Day...of all days! Next week Tuesday 1st April 8pm. I would love to see a younger crowd come to this gig, I think they will get a lot out of it. Our youngest poet, Chris McMurray is into Hobohemian issues, he speaks for the generation dealing with modern life.

Q. Do you plan to do other shows with the Theoradical Hobohemians?
A. To be quite honest I hope not!! (laughing). All I can see is the finishing line for the Basement gig and thats all I can focus on at the moment but who knows I'm very good friends with these great people and never say never!!! Ask me again after the show!!!

Thanks Ruth you have been great to interview and all the best with your show Theoradical Hobohemians.
