A song about the mess that is the Auckland Public Transport System - "Big City" by Ha the Unclear

I saw a great performance of this song live at Winecellar a while back and I am glad to hear the recording turned out so well! I really like the lyrical story that underpins the song. I instantly relate as a person whom also frequents the hideous mess that is Auckland public transport. Glad to hear a local song that captures the inward battle of the Auckland commute so vividly.

Jazzy Hip Hop - E.P

A live record I engineered in Avondale inside an Industrial warehouse. It's unpolished and raw but has a sweet vibe.

Merk at the Winecellar - 2017

My friend and I rolled up late to the gig at the Winecellar. We paid our door charge and then quickly a young man scribbled the name of a band on each of our hands. I was labelled a Bozo laughs. My friend Azriel and I bounded through the narrow doorway and then crashed to a halt drinks in hand as the sweaty tall crowd barred most of the gig we came to see. People were crammed into nooks and crannies filling up the newly renovated room of the wine cellar.

A nostalgic pang nudged me forward as I realised for all intents and purposes that this winecellar before my eyes was not the original but a simulacrum or version 2.0. Long gone were the mouldy couches and decrepit furnishings even the ceiling of the venue seemed to slouch less like an old fat mans tummy who has discovered the virtues of a good trusty belt to keep his overflowing gut under wraps. I also hazily seemed to recall carpets in winecellar but that could be mind playing tricks on me. Whatever it is this new place seemed considerably less homely and instead more vibrant and awake ready built for gigs and entertainment of a less sleepy nature. For to be fair in the past there were a lot more acoustic gigs in the previous reincarnation of the wine cellar.  But now it seemed the midnight country crooners had fell out of favour and instead bands reigned supreme which is all good in my book.

Getting back to why I was even there for I cast my vision to the centre of the stage at the far end of the room where I spotted Merk on guitar, Fazerdaze on bass, someone who I think is Neil Finn's younger son on drums (although I could be completely wrong) and a curly headed man with fingers dancing up and down millions of piano keys. The ramshackle bunch of musicians were all silhouetted on stage by cheap manual overhead projectors, the ones with lightbulbs inside them that they use to use at school when I was in primary. Like before the invention of computers as we know them laughs. Huddled round the projector were two girls with dark hair who looked rather tall pouring cooking oil on a see-through plastic tray and scraping it around with a piece of plastic so they could make funny shapes and textures that were in turn lashed onto the barren walls by the two projectors creating instant mind-bending ambiance.

With all this going on Merk's music seemed to come alive as did the whole band who were all laughing and grinning as they jumped from one song to the next with the odd bit of banter in-between. What I really like about the sound of the music set was firstly the tone of the drums which sounded excellent and larger than life in many parts due to the expert talent of the metronomic drummer. Indeed the band as a whole all seemed very precise and well rehearsed making it a pleasure to listen too. The bass guitar played by Amelia was like a chunky fat little child struggling to be pushed up a great big hill by a petite mother gripping onto her wayward pram for dear life. While Merk pounced around like a black panther in the middle of the stage overflowing with equal measures of happiness (that comes from within from what I have read) and joy (that comes from without or outside).

It was fun to see the bands ringleader dash from instrument to instrument smiling and laughing with a theatrical jib or joke thrown in to catch the baited audience off guard. One of the most memorable parts of the show for me was when Merk looked to be standing high up on something maybe a box playing a simple yet eye watering guitar lead in a crashing crescendo of a song while simultaneously looking around the crowded room with piercing eyes. To me it looked like he was trying to ascertain whether anyone was aware of how simple and easy what he was playing on the guitar was to play. And perhaps if given half a minute any one from the audience would've been able to play what he was doing and usurp him. Then again I could be completely wrong and he could've just been struggling for air and hot up on stage while nearing the end of his set.

My favourite highlight from the show in hindsight was when Merk and his band collaborated with the crowd at the wine cellar choosing a chord structure by throwing jacky sacks into hoops or trash cans or something to that affect. With the chords on the wall I think he pulled up some lyrics and recited them over the music, but maybe he came up with them on the spot I'm not sure? Anyway I really enjoyed the song this song that was sweet and crusiey that Az and I were loosely a part of helping create. After the jingly song ended Merk was gracious enough to state to all of us in attendance             "that everyone will be getting a fair-share of the Apra royalties from that song!" laughs.

Movie Review - “Crystal Fairy & The Magical Cactus”

You may know of Micheal Cera he has made a lot of crap movies that we’ve probably all watched hated and yet secretly enjoyed. Well dis-regard all your movie prejudice and well placed Hollywood animosity because “Crystal Fairy and the Magical Cactus” available to watch on Netflix's kicks some serious millennial ass.

The film is based around the ding bat pictured above who is from America and travels all the way to Chile to get wasted on Cactus. Along the way he meets some locals who he befriends including the free spirited and foxy lady “Crystal Fairy”, together the squad decide to find a Cactus and cook it up to get a nice natural buzz going on.

Important to note - said cactus is only found in Chile. Everyone in the film can’t believe how a pasty white guy with no name could travel all the way to their beautiful country just to get ‘out of it’ and drink his lethal slimy looking concoction on a beach.

The reason why this film is a must see is not to see actors simply pretending to drink peyote cause they actually do no acting necessary yo! Instead you owe it to yourself to watch this film because in one way or another we’re all like the lost American with the cactus desperately searching out something to give our life meaning. We are all guilty of investing our time, energy, love, dreams, hopes into a shallow dead end to avoid the realisation we are all going to die.

By going on the cinematic journey with ‘Crystal Fairy’ a strange and cosmic woman she shows all morons the world over how we must embrace all aspects of our lives, not only one that we think holds all the answers. This is because we always risk disappoint when we invest heavily in a holy grail that offers any robust meaning to our lives. Arghh shucks just watch the bloody film!

Fuzzed Out at Fuzzy Islands - Bozo, Astrochildren, Miss June

Bozo:

If your a fan of psyched out U.S college radio friendly music this band is for you. Yolanda (singer/drummer) and gang offered some trippy tunes their overall sound was accentuated with some tasty snare accents and singing processed through a phased chorus cloud of reverb. Guy also of The Echo Oh's played some concrete riffs and chords on rhythm guitar anchoring the whole group whilst demonstrating some impressive musical leadership. The younger guitarist in the band who plays with New Gum Sarn also threw up a collage of delectable lead riffs and scales that added complexity and shimmering colour to the bands sound. The musical rapport between the younger guitarist and Guy was obvious to myself in the crowd leaning on the pillar at Fuzzy islands. It's always a beautiful thing to witness two musicians in sync parlaying riffs off against each other adding to the bands high stakes performance.

Another thing I liked about Bozo was the dedicated percussionist playing tambourine. By playing sixteenth and quarter notes on the tambourine as well as solidifying the backbeat on the two and the four this freed up Yolanda to play more toms and rolls while singing. The percussionist effectively eliminated the drummer from needing to play the standard rock drum beats and allowed her to play nice ride patterns and tribal patterns. I also thought Yolanda had a natural and well poised technique with even hitting that mad the drums sing, smashing the crap out of a kit can get rather boring and sadomasochistic.

The bands first and middle songs of the set I found to be there strongest. One song that jumped out had a great dynamic guitar motif where the band would get louder for a certain refrain with an almost ear splitting ripping apart of the song by the musicians before being quickly super glued back together. I almost forgot to mention the young female keyboardist/singer/bass player who shared vocal duties carrying the band for certain numbers. I found the juxtaposition of to singers pretty kick ass as you would never know who was gonna sing the next song. I was also deeply impressed with the musical low end of the young female musicians bass playing. To sum up a raucous cacophony of buzzy music.

Astrochildren:

Hailing from Dunedin the windswept two piece were hanging on the walls of Fuzzy Islands pre-gig when I paid my door charge to see them. After releasing their first record on Muzai records they're and their latest release themselves they preformed a formidable set on the night alongside Miss June who played after them. When my friend and I skipped over the entrance to the gig people were still running late to the maxed out show so we dipped outside to get a drink and turned up a bit later. Our stamps were studiously studied for possible forgery and we again re-entered Fuzzy Islands. Dis-claimer this was my first time at said venue which I liked. After Bozo played DJs spun indie approved obscure records before Astrochildren tuned up and turned their lone amp up to 12 for a full on audio attack.

Astrochildren's drummer Izaak bashed on his cracked gold cymbals to make sure they were ready to give way for another night of RockNRoll torture, thankfully they were. Distorted feedback rang out throughout the room like a foggy mist with an amp fighting against lead guitarist Millie. Eventually the amp was seduced and dominated into submission and the songs flowed like a tsunami. My favourite two songs of the night were 'Boys Encourage Female Rivalry" discussing gender issues and feeling inadequate faced by the beautiful other as well as the new single on the 7 inch vinyl 'when you lose'. I always enjoy hearing lyrics from a feminine perspective and also know how Millie felt as men also struggle with identity issues and body dis-morphia.

I firmly believe musics a sick art form to educate people about social issues, but sometimes it's good not to end up preaching to the choir. At one point I was almost overpowered by the volume of the Astro set and had to stand outside and get some fresh air while being splattered by rain. Eventually I sucked in my guts and went inside to finish off the gig. In all honesty I was stoked to see the droony uncompromising style of Astrochildren as I came away from their set knowing they had given everything they had on stage and feeling buzzed out that new Kiwi artists aren't afraid to be themselves 100%.

It's also pretty obvious now on reflection that Astrochildren are about jarring people and making them feel uncomfortable through music. They want to test your belief systems and the socially ingrained status quo that lives within every member of New Zealand society. Kinda like the first matrix movie I mean do you want to step out into the real world with Astrochildren surrounded by the heaving weight of social disparities or do you just want to sit on a chair and drink beers and not really give a fark.

Miss June:

After being an online fan of Miss June on the back of their debut E.P "Matriarchy" I was excited to see them play. I managed to make out the whole band in the crowd and it was sweet to see them supporting the other bands always a sweet move. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the intimate glances that the band members would do to each other like a platoon or a militant army psyching themselves up before storming the barricades of the packed house to rocknroll. For their first song they launched into a grunge blast beat after a showy musical flex of virtuosity in a pre-set warm up that I wish had been an actually song haha. Fanboy dis-claimer I also developed a great respect for Miss June's drummer and appreciated his lightning fast jazz chops and powerful as well as unique combinations behind the drums.

The bands first song really started to get cooking when the guitar dropped with a snarl whipping crash driving the moshing crowd into unrestrained fury. The venue was pretty small for a circle of death but as the set progressed things started to get pretty hectic with myself trying to avoid another elbow in the stomach ones enough lol. The song that really sent people into hyper drive and caused the room to shudder was 'Clyde the Turtle' people were singing the chorus from the opening guitar twang and when the chorus dropped everyone went bezerk and the crowd turned into a raging horde of insanity, well you know what I mean. A guy i was next to moshing was dressed up in a classic punk outfit and he had a kinda of devilish vibe about him, I thought perhaps he was gonna go stir crazy but surprisingly he was quite civil and well behaved in the crowd.

Andrew from Die Die Die was also halfway up the stairs hanging through the rafters filming Miss June which was cool to see and made me thought man everybody's a director these days and the film is well our lives haha. Their was also a bit of funny banter from lead singer Annabel Liddel as she explained how basic her guitar part is for the song 'Clyde' plonking one string with a laugh. If I can remember the band played an encore with Annabel doing a post-mint chicks unstable vocal delivery on amp after losing her black beret and the set ended. Many people wanted more music but fark'em sometimes you get what your given laughs and have to flog that shit on trade me.

Salsoul Records - My fav Disco label

Today I read a book on the history of the disco music movement. To my surprise I discovered the power of independent record labels that ran the game. My favourite disco label was Salsoul Records started by 3 brothers and spearheaded by one particular brother. The label sold their first single to a major for 100k as the bigger company wanted to take it too the pop charts, they failed.

But the money was still paid and allowed the brothers to invest in roughly ten singles with the best studio musicians in Philadelphia. Their second single went on to sell 400,000 copies and the first album around 500,000.

However, the brother did get stuck in a bad position and had to release the first album himself but lucky he did! because they got all the money haha. By the 80's disco was dead, I wonder if modern electronica will be the same? Whats for certain is 'dance music' continuning aka music that makes human beings dance, the question is in what genre and style next!

Music Video; Fazerdaze - A Little Uneasy

The music video for "Little Uneasy" is Fazerdazer's fist ever visual offering. The video premiered on The 405 blog where she described the context of the video and why she thought it was appropriate to dust off and bring out her old skateboard from retirement: http://tinyurl.com/hmezwcg

If you don't know about Amelia Murray a local musician from Auckland, NZ it's all good!??
Your just missing out on a prodigious talent with an unerving knack for aweinspiring melodies.          I also particularly like the way she programs drum machines. Which ties into my second point about the rocky band leader which is how Amelia takes a real hands on approach to writing, arranging and recording her music almost completely by herself (for her first record anyway). Make sure to checkout Fazerdazer's first release available on Bandcamp below:

I feel I should also just mention the rare and uncommon feat that the runaway success of the Fazerdazer E.P achieved on an indie level. Selling quite a few copies and connecting deeply with indie and alt minded listeners and blogs. On the back of such unexpected success Amelia hit the road touring independently around New Zealand. Afterwards she would go on to support Unknown Mortal Orchestra and most recently Australian muso Matt Corby.

Also word on the street is according to my friend Lucas who attended a Fazerdaze gig in Whammy's backroom recently Amelia mentioned that she had completed her first debut LP to be released asap. However, it's uncertain whether she will release the record on Flying Out, go indepedent, sign with Flying Nun or Archill or choose another label possibly outside NZ. We'll just have to wait and see about that one!

I was actually lucky enough to see Amelia play live at the Goldendawn a wee while ago with her full band. I was really impressed with her stage presence and how she guided the band kinda like Steve Jobs playing the role of conductor at an Apple presentation prior to passing. Ignore last sentence alas I lapsed into a Kanyeist moment of hyperbowler. At the gig Amelia's voice was just as beautiful in the flesh as on the record which is always sick. Nothing worse than having pitch correction on every note like Courtney Love was rumoured to have needed, just watch the video on youtube and brace your eardrums folks. The NZ band plans on touring the U.K soon where the brit's will no doubt love Fazerdaze who have already placed a song on a british band compilation in the past. Hopefully the band will sell some cds and make new fans inbetween having heaps of fun :)

Skinny Hobos - The Merchant of Tirau (Official Video)

Thank the devil for more local NZ music. I was beginning to suffer some serious rocknroll withdrawl, which is never ideal. Ha this is a funny video by Skinny Hobo's who I saw preform live last year and have been meaning to see for ages (sadly couldn't make it too Galatos as I got really sick on vodka which was awful!!). But man the power and riff off this song is bloody brilliant. I looked at their instagram photos and saw how many amps they used to track the guitar in the studio and I'm glad it all worked out. I also really dig the drum flourshies and fills. When I first heard the track it reminded me of the Offspring a band that was big in NZ when I was growing up. The video is one hell of hilliarous journey and the music blogger getting schooled cracked me up! nice one :)looking forward to a record from the guys soon

Capitalist Sociological Breakdown of Radio-heads new video "Burn the Witch"

The video for this song reminds me of a satanic postman pat with a guy walking around and surveying an evil village probably a metaphor for modern society. The mayor in the video is an evil dude. Strings and synths in this tune are top notch with a chronic vocal performance by Thom Yorke. A lot the video is referencing the evils of capitalism. There is creepy cult vibe imagery that hints our how we are sacrificing the youth in society for the older to gain power and wealth. The excellently fleeting shot of the gluttonous food is dripping and drenched in the blood of the human young and animal a like.

A hanging nose hangs empty in the city centre quietly oppressing people and ever ready to kill individuals who don't support the ruling capitalist ideology.Workers in an orchard are exploited and forced to labour while their dickhead bosses drink strong booze right in front of them profiting off their hard work while they stand idle.

The viewer is then thrust into a village festival that tries to show how great and happy everyone is continuing the great big lie of the village. The early shot of a man painting a red cross foreshadows the sinister idea of the mayor and his aim of despotic rule. In the festival the facade is abandoned and the true nature of capitalism is uncovered the aim to kill all that oppose (though there are only very few brave enough to oppose hence why there is only the one man with a bowler hat).

Once the man with the bowler hat is tricked into entering into the system of capitalism uncovered or unleashed a possible hint to neo-liberalism the giant burning man is set a light with the whole town forced to watch. It demonstrates to the masses how one will get burnt alive by society and murdered by individuals drunk on power relations. It also conveys how we are forced to becoming a complicit party to the horrors of capitalism to avoid our individual head being chocked the nose.

However, the man with the bowler hat, the lead actor in the film manages to escape and run away into the bushes in the very last shot. The whole video echo's how everything in modernity is conveyed as great and awesome, where in reality everyone is tricked into thinking our lives are fantastic under the very real threat of death and painful social repercussions.

The video also highlights how the mayors, politicians and business owners get to profit from our collective working together to live a life of excessive corrupt luxury. From this point I think its interesting how the man escapes back into the wild, it kind of shows how he turns away from society in order to survive although he was very happy to be a part of it in a removed sense by merely being a spectator of the horrors. The man with the bowler hat is only thrust out of his happy disposition under capitalism when he is forced to due to the very nature of his role as a spectator. No one is allowed to examine the village and how it functions a metaphor for capitalism least the cracks holes and evil in it be uncovered like the burning man.

Finally I should mention the happy singing bird at the start of the video, this bird a metaphor for the whole animal kingdom is blissful in nature and it sees the whole disaster of human society unfold from a distance and yet through all the horrors of human society it becomes affected by our bad and destructive behaviours under capitalism the song of the bird changes animals are forced to be transformed as is man from a state of happiness to one of extreme fear and anxiety, this is because I think the bird realizes that if man is in trouble it could threaten its way of life - war, exploitation of nature and burning deforestation will harm all animals causing them to fall like human beings have from a state of naive bliss into a painful capital fuelled nightmare.

The bird also hints at human beings egotism and specism and complete lack of compassion for animals - we look down on there way of life as primitive and lacking the materialist objects of capitalism. Which is wrong because it seems the video is trying to convey at the heart of modern society a foundation is layed built on the killing, slaughtering and murdering of innocent people who don't want to live under capitalism in a false sense of consumer happiness.

I think Radiohead's video is probably about many people not being allowed to join in the fantasy of past generations of humanity who have been allowed to live inside the pseudo-masochist capitalist dream

On a lighter note

Bassline is classic fat thumping flea style with an eerie reference to the recently deceased Prince.
The lyrics are top notch in this track with the melody that has a nice minor note vibe with dyspotpian lyrics that make your brain click and start function again the chorus also has some dope ass shakers and back up vocals are syrupy. Great progressive move for the band aka adding to the legacy of RHCP

A poem/prose inspired by an evil bartender with eyes darker than a blackhole in Ponsonby

(1)

Painted whores with
missing teeth clutching
desperately at their dignity
and fleeting youth
Impaled desecrated

discarded

If you find yourself

in the unenviable position to be
part of the unread zombie crowd
of this detestable Ponsonby bar beware of
the satanic pantomimes and lack of exuberance
that festers
preserving the great unwashed like a lost frame of 36mm drained of all colour overexposed and cut to pieces

hipster i feel i must warn you that once
you enter the establishment you should quickly grab hold of the nearest alcoholic at hand
A tick of approval if their a belligerent
ass-hole

bring them close and engage in mindless folly
rabbiting on about epic tales of half truths and flamboyant lies dressed up in leather jackets adorned with sequins dreams
and rest easy knowing they are the best company the tragic beautiful lead actress in the radicals play of life and death the lest pretentious diva of the aquatic drinking environment polluted with human toxicity
For Though we may seem drunker than a runover family of skunks homeless in L.A
In reality the well sneakered stronghold of hipsters are dripping in lethal hemlock

waiting to waterboard our minds into mangled American indoctrination
be very careful for they know only one thing how to hold a grudge
like iron their hands bleed with exploitation
farce fills their eyes their callous worn hands a remainder of their low existence

If you do insult them commit to the end
for they are more bitter than the very last drop off granny smith cider freefalling from the lushes mouth into the bottom of the barrel constructed out of envy hatred and discontent
